The 33bhp 2 year rule. How does it work??

Once you pass the test on a 125, you can ride a restricted 600 bike.
I presume you still have to display L plates??
But if you were on a 125 you wouldn't??

I passed my restricted acess test in july. Now i can ride ANY bike, so long as it is restricted to 33bhp. I dont have to wear L plates and can also carry pillions. Basically i have a full normal licence, with the single exception that i cannot ride a bike with a bhp figure of above 33 for two years after i passed the test. Hope this helps.

but anyone who has already passed before jan 1st will be okay, they are not back dating it.

no L plates, you can ride any bike you like (including a rocketIII or hayabusa!) as long as its been restricted to less than 33HP or 35PS or whatever way round they want it. this restriction lasts 2 years from the date you passed your full test.

what i dont know is if anything is mentioned on your license about being restricted, or if you have to get a your license changed after 2 years. i doubt it.

From what I understood from my instructor, as of Jan 2013, if you take and pass your test on a 125, you're restricted to a 125 for 2 years... then, after two years, you'll have to take another test to be able to ride a bigger bike.

There is a 'information code' point 12 on the back of the plastic licence that reads '=<25KW'. There is no mention of when this expires so the licence has to be sent back to the DVLA to get this removed.

from 19th of jan it gets complicated ...

age 17 to 19 regardless of passing a test ..125 only thats it

19 to 24 46.6 bhp test must be taken on a bike of min 395cc but under 46.6 bhp thats it for for two years

after that if you want a bigger bike you must retake your test on a bike of 72bhp

there may be a bit of slack on this as most schools dont have them but its not official ]


if you restrict a bike it must not make twice 46.6 bhp as standard ..93.2 is the cut off point

I asked a rider trainer this the other day and even he still didn't know if you could do DAS or had to work your way through!
You probably have to get your licence updated once your 2 years are up but I just waited until I got my car licence and got it updated at the same time. I heard it was £20 just to change that detail.

as over 25 does not affect other than the choice of bike you want to ride either take test on 125 for 125 only or 500ish bike for a restricted licence to 46.6 bhp and langer bike usually 600+ for any bike.

if you cannot ride a geared bike you will only be able to take test on an aprilia mana this is the only bike with semi-auto transmission on the finalised list to take a motorcycle test after 19th jan 2013.

if you do have a disability however you would be allowed to take test on a gilera fucco which is a scooter with 3 wheels.
