camping tips whats yours?

My Camping tip is in regard to a pillow

I use a small zip up cushion cover into which you can stuff your fleeces or jumper

This works much better than just a rolled up jumper and saves you having to carry a pillow with you so saving bit of space

As people have said always use a much higher rated sleeping bag than you think you need

I have several different bags now from 2 to 4 session but over the last few years I’ve given up using the light weight ones and just take the 4 session one every time

Throw in a silk liner and a Gortex Bivvie bag and you have year round comfort

Can't fault your thinking, bar one small element....

I would feel safer sleeping on the opposite side of the bike.

Thanks for the thought-this was considered the ground was hard (stones) so no risk of bike sinking. Side stand failing also considered but prepared to take the risk.

at a rally this year a mate did the ray mears type camp, hammock with tarp overhead, between two trees. was doing fine with his minimalist camp till he found a huge dog poo while wearing flip flops.

so another camping tip, dont wear flip flops

Cant think of anything more disgusting than peeing outside the tent door, then sleeping with the smell, then climbing over it to get in and out the tent. Keep a spare plastic bottle.

In terms of camping comfort, especially if expecting any rain or wind at all PITCH TENT PROPERLY nice and square, with taut outer, and use your guy ropes and all pegging points. Treat the tent with Nixwax before you go. The number if tents I see on campsites where you think 'what rough arsed monkey threw that up?', theres nothing better than being woken by heavy rain and wind in the middle of the night, and rolling over and going back to sleep with no worries smug in the knowledge theres none of that weather getting inside your tent.

Also three words 'therm a rest'. Best bit of camping kit I ever bought.

i have over the years up graded as i can afford ,and now have very good gear.
and yes it pays off i sleep well and can cook for up to ten on the equipment i can carry on my bike!!

Apologies for going off topic, but if I can briefly ask:

John, what is the tent in your Avatar? Is that a Vango?

I love teepee style tents. But most of the ones I've come across thus far
have been a bit big for bike-camping... well, in terms of my own preferences anyway.
