Location suggestions please - wild camping at either Glen Etive or Glen Orchy

Some folk say that Smidge (?) works well in deterring the little blighters. DEET is nasty stuff - it melts plastic :0/

glen etive is particularly bad with midges just at the moment.

Skin So soft doesn't work for me either, I swear by Jungle Formula extra strength (Deet) and a head net for when they're really bad.

Rules in Scotland are you can camp on any land as long as you are at least 100m from a public highway but in practice that's not really a worry and camping next to minor roads is not a problem.

By coincidence - in todays' Glasgow Herald Letters section - someone has written in explaining how forestry and farming changes have turned the country into a Midge Heaven.

I think my hubby got fed up with me pointing out all the wild camp sites on the way home from Applecross, he switched the Scala off, plenty choice when you head north on the single track road, or if you want near the pub then there is a great bit round the bay from the pub.

Looking for some suggestions and maybe google earth pointers/locations please.

Planning to go 'wild' camping next weekend 21st July - never been to Glen Etive and seen quite a few mentions also of Glen Orchy ( which I believe is on the road from Tyndrum towards Oban).

Who's been to either/both - and any specific spots you would recommend - that could take about 6 bikes and tents together in the one place.

Where are you traveling from? I wouldn't go near the west coast at this time of year, it's horrendous! You willhave the most uncomfortable nights you can imagine - crawling!! I would try and stay central north. It all depends where your coming from and what you want to see.

Travelling from Troon Ayrshire West Coast. Not looking for anything special - just a couple of nights away at a nice spot alongside a river, loch or seashore - to camp, barbie and relax.

With Applecross - and the bay nearby - advantage is that we're within walking distance of the Inn which is a great little place - but we also like to take all our own provisions and just sit around a campfire, eat, drink and talk nonsense!

Ive never done the Applecross trip but its a popular route. That tells me its a nice run with something good at the end of it!

Im biased being based in Crieff, I was out today for a run, St.Fillans and Lochearnhead are really nice, loads of places to wild camp, the Lochs 6 miles long, a few hotels dotted a long the stretch. Youve got Tyndrum about 25 minutes from there which takes you through Glencoe. Stunning! You can either route down by Oban or head up toward Fortwilliam. Another nice place is Fort Augustus. Often over looked.

mike 54 is right re busy,the dates your going is the glasgow trades 2 weeks holiday and will be full of arseholes, theirs loads of places to wild camp in scotland.iv just come back from a few days wild camping and found a belter of a place near tayvallich on the west coast

Keep the suggestions coming please - Tayvallich, lochs near Crief/Killin plus others mentioned have never been considered before - and all look great for future trips...
