heidenau k60 scout

Post by minkyhead »

well its took 8 days to get here from our efficiant german suppliers

ive gon for the newer scout model ..

ive took a chance and put a 140 instead of a 130 on the back of the ten
as the 130 is the older compound and not reported as being as good

ive read a lot on them and they seem to be a good tyre for the road ..all reports have been positive regardind grip and longevity

a lot of people rate the rear very highly for dual purpose bikes off road and the wear rate reported is staggering
people have been less keen on the front off road but again rate them very highly on road
im going to see how they go ive no intention of seeking out silly mud on a nike this big anyway
quite few have gone k60 rear and tk front
i know tks are very poor wearing on longer trips on the rear

anyway ill get em on and let you know how they go over the next few weeks
theve gotta be better than the siracs off road thats for sure :woohoo:

in fairness to the siracs they have been very very good on the road and i would not be worried about fitting them again for that purpose
theyhave been the equal of all the usual suspects [tourance trail wings ect ect

im like most im trying to find a long lasting tyre that wont spit you off the moment you hit a bit of trail

tread depth looks good compared to the standard road bias tyres
im hoping they will give a good compramise

I'm off work from the 17th (work-do that night so better not count the 18th actually  ) to the 4th...reckon you, me and Barnman (and anyone else who's around) could check out some of those old Roman roads up near Paul? ;) :)

...besides, I still haven't seen your new motor in the flesh! :cheer:

just thought id get back to you on the tyres

ive around 600 miles up now

first thing to say is the road manners on the tyres are really very good indeed
near all riding has been in shitty cold shiny roads

never any issues with grip or turn in surprisingly white lining goes unnoticed
a little blast on dryish roads on sunday getting home getting a little more on the shoulder was no problem at all

nice and stable on the motorways no noticible noise /
so positive on road grip for sure B) B)

ive done a few trails and dicked around in the woods ...

hard packed cart roads and gravel as you would expect no trouble 25 30 mph if i ever see any dryness again you could fly a fair bit quicker here but thres still the odd ice surprise among the rotting leaves grrr

wet slippy mud and slippy grass tracks
the rear hooks up pretty well it does break here and there but generally drives well given the limitations of the tread ..its a good 50 50 tyre ..light years in front of trail wings siracs ect not too bad at all
as a road tyre to go off road its not too bad here
on the other hand its hugly behind a dedicated knobbly
enduro boys will hate it ..its a slow speed get me through tyre
me general plan is not to activly seek it out ...

the front as you may expect is not as good but it does grip .
these are for modest speeds only in slippy mud ..on the siracs the bike would have been over no question ...the front does warn you as it moves and a qick dip of the clutch you can feel it regain traction where as the road trails would just comtinue to slide away
verdict .. theyll get you through slowly as long as its not silly snot filled trenches

medium terain i thought they were pretty decent i/e wet soil rubble
i chose a climb and paused a few mins as to be honest ithought i would end up on me arse..
two ciggys later sod it only one way to find out and went up any way
i was surprised ..

i got the bike up a few tricky climbs which to be honest i didnt think there would be enough drive .. again on the siracs i would imagine three meters before giving up ,,the rear on these drove well 75 meteres to the top

all in all so far as a 50 50 maby 6040 tyre there pretty impressive
now if i can get the huge milage touted by the other forums ill be pleased

happy new year

quite steep wet soil

I'll be following this one with interest – ended up with another Tourance on the back of my Ten this time round as I don't need the off-road bias that a TKC would offer. That said I've found the Tourances to be lacking to say the least when it gets a bit loose under wheel so these Heidenau's look like they could be just the right balance for me.

there good on the road lee i like them better than the tks i had on the gs particulary the front ..they feel like a normal road tyre

on the flip side i think the tk front is better in muddy stuff although when i let the front down to 22 psi it was much more willing to grip

on the flip flip side i think the scout rear is better on the road and at least as good off

compared to tourance they are far far more capable off tarmack certainly a consideration and for occasional light off roading are near perfect

They look like great tyres -- pity they don't seem to make them to fit the BMW F800GS. I guess I'll just have to keep looking for my 'perfect tyre'.

yeh the 150 is only in 18 in at the moment strange but true apparantly they withdrew the 150/17 for more testing [which is good i think ?] and supposedly due out soon

lots of gsers have run the 140 on adv rider

i would have run a 120 if they had one rather than the wider tyre for more off road grip

ill pop back up this thread after a few 1000 miles ..see if they are as tough on the road as they say

Hola ...

I managed to get a 150/70 17 for my 800 - one of the last pre-eco tyres, although if you fit the more readily available 140 you'll probably not see any difference - it's only 5mm each side after all!

I've done about 4k on it so far and must be halfway through the tread on the rear, mostly tarmac  but the tyres perform better than they really should...

I put a set on my R1200GS and went with a 140 rear as I couldn't find a 150 anywhere. A couple of guys on UKGSer had been running with the 140 and recommended it - definitely some 800 riders with that set up too. For what it's worth I couldn't find any issue with the different size and the handling was great. Maybe slightly less planted at very high speed than the Anakees I had on before but then obviously much more capable as an all-round tyre.

I only kept the bike for a short time after the K60s were fitted as I decided to trade it in for a KTM but I was very happy with how the tyres were wearing. I didn't get to take them off road other than a simple short gravel track which they were great for. I put about 1000 miles on them on the road, mostly wet or frosty B roads with the inevitable tractor mud on bends.

Less important than performance and wear of course but it is worth saying that they are also a very good looking tyre when fitted.

Was very happy with them and would definitely consider a set for my 990 when the time comes to replace the stock Scorpions.
