Hi Just a note I run Heide K60 Scout on the rear of my Hack in the Wet Dry Snow Mud its been excellet 10,000 miles 8mm left Important Note I run a pressure of 27 psi. If i put pressure upto 30plus its hopless in the mud and whears the centre only.
Size 150/60/18 same size as KTM My BMW should run 160/60/18 solo but as its a sidecar the tyre flatens off very quickly.
I recommend Heide above TK although softer rubber I found 4,000 miles worn out.
Sidecar Riggs do eat rear tyres though. My tyre choise Sidecar Joe

Thanks for that Tramp, Excellent thread.I dont intend to do any real rough stuff but would like to do some easier tracks on the trip in May/June so am looking for tyres that are approx 20%off 80% on road. K60's seem to fit the bill nicely.
ps.Internet skills doing fine. :P

I know the internet aint your best sublect  ;)

dont think many uk riders use the "strom" on trails due to mag wheels etc..but for the odd excursion onto the ruff stuff k60 scouts will be fine..but have a look at Mitas E07 not E09 as they wont last the same and are more trail than road ..

I've got a few hundred miles under my rear K60 now. Wasn't ideal for any new tyre on the first few rides as the roads had that odd greasiness you get when it's cold, but not quite icy. The rear felt loose when leaning over and I wasn't very confident it it, I could definitely feel it slip if I gave it any throttle when leaning over :side: . However with some miles on it, and lowering the pressure a little, I'm much happier. I had a 90 mile run yesterday on dry roads and got to move the bike about more aggressively to see how it felt and I have to say I'm very happy with it. One downside is that it tram-lines much more noticeably than the old Scorpion.

I've had the chance to ride a couple of short but mucky lanes and while it's definitely not a mud tyre it is better that the originally fitted Scorpion. (My front Scorpion is always the main worry in any sort of soft terrain!)

On balance I think I'm going to like it. I think (hope!) the initial looseness was just down to it being new and the road conditions. Even though it is just on the bike I think the wear will be better than my previous tyres ... I could virtually see the new wear on the Scorpions after each ride but the Scouts just look lightly scuffed after a few hundred miles.

Front Scorpion will need changed soon. Now need to decide what goes on there ... Scorp / Scout / Other??? Same criteria that I had for the rear ... solid and predictable on road, better than Scorpions off road (they're dire in any sort of mud or sand). I suppose mileage isn't just so important to me for the front as it's the rear that I'm hard on.

A G-clamp (or cramp depending on age) makes an excellent bead breaker for both tubeless and tubed tyres. It's a bit heavy for carting around but it takes up a lot less space in the garage than a proper breaker if you only use it a handful of times a year.

As for the tyre pressures on big bikes such as the 1200GS. I had a chat with Si Pavey and he runs all his 1200s at 25psi. He said they will go lower but they started to see a lot more flats with the tyres coming off the bead. This was when running TXC or Mitas E10 which are a lot softer than the K60.

About the tyre pressure, thanks Boris. 24psi (1.6bar) sounds a bit scary low for the road?? ... KTM handbook says 34psi front and 37psi rear (2.4bar and 2.6bar). I'm currently running the K60 rear at 35psi (2.5bar) but it could maybe go a bit softer.

It may well be and I should say we were talking off road (with some road use) pressures here. The GSA cross spoke wheels are also tubeless so no tubes to rip the Schroeder valve off should the tyre move.

I know it's apples and oranges but I run the XR400 at 15psi on and off the road but it is a much lighter bike and I do run rim locks.

K60's
im looking at these, im currently running pilot trails on my xt1200z. while they have superb grip in road conditions, i really want the bike to look like a dirt/trail bike, plus when away on bike events, and touring i want the ability to go anywhere for camping in fields and forests.
are these tyres good on tarmac as i like to hoon around and i like a bit of supermoto styley riding at times when out with sporty bike mates ? wots the verdict.
or other recommendations please chaps,
i only need one wheel .......... the rear
