You'd think I'd know better? RD04

Post by africajim »

You'd think at my age and with my background in bikes I could spot a bad un'!

I had a visit from Grampians finest tonight to inspect my Honda XRV 750 RD04 project and they promptly seized the bike :(

Irregularities in the frame, VIN and engine numbers. Hopefully this can be sorted out one way or another but I've been told this can take up to three years!

The bike was bought through a mate from the Aberdeen area but had been bought by him through Ebay a couple of months previously so looked ligit.

So, a nice warning to you all, always make sure you know a bike's history before buying cash! The only thing I know for sure tonight is the bike out the back is not a Honda CH50 as the DVLA say the numbers off of.

Oh Jim,
I'm proper sad to hear that, did they give any indication as to if they had caught the scrote who nicked it in the first place? as they must have followed some sort of trail (no pun intended) to get to you.
It strikes me that ultimately there could be a claim by your mate on e bay , and if successful, he weighs you in?
Any which way I hope your sorted soon.
I know it's not a lot but a K for your troubles mate.

PS Just to expand on the above,I'm assuming that the bike wasn't on the road, therefore Police must be sniffing out a trail.
The end of the road is the start of the fun

A bad day on the bike is still better than a good day at the office

Sorry to hear of your loss jim.

That's scary! My Dad has just bought a Kawasaki 650 which looks similar to a BSA from an elderley chap off ebay. Accordiing to the insurance company, the frame number matches that of a tractor which was wrote off 3 years ago!! In this case, we believe its a case of mistaken identity as its only the last four digits the insurance company check and not the full number.

By the way, I did check the bike out using the text pay facility when you text an agency the reg number and it come back with a clear history before we purchased.

Somethings very fishy! Becareful as my Dad could potentially loose 3K.

Thanks Mark,
The bike is a Honda XRV750 RD04, came from London area through Ebay roughly 6 months ago, I bought it two months ago from Aberdeen area. The bike was on Ebay, rough, been sitting since 2002, made around £650. A friend of a friend told me about it, a guy from around Aberdeen had bought it and shipped it up north, got fed up with it and bought a Transalp so was seliing the RD04.
I bought it with no docs so applied to DVLA, they sent the traffic police to inspect due to irregularities.
The reg number is from a Honda 50 insurance write off. The frame and engine numbers are still to be checked.
The police advised the bike would have to be seized pending investigation but could take a long time to sort out.
Just a timely warning to all, easy to fall into the trap of buying bikes with no history.

Hi Jim, sorry to hear of your troubles. Did you make a note of the engine number? Did the frame/chassis number look ok or was there any sign of over stamping/weld etc. The Police vehicle examiner should be able to tell this pretty quickly and find out what the bike actually is. If he believes it is a ringer and can't identify it because they have completely obliterated all signs of previous id, then ther may be some delay. If they can, either it is owned by someone else or an insurance company. You may be able to buy it back again......

I would suggest you give the Police a couple of weeks and then get onto the vehicle examiner, find out what is going on.
