The easiest way is to throw £££ at it and get a nice new rear shock from rally raid and a set of exc front forks but I think you may have to remove the ABS, which in my opinion would be a blessing.

I think the d908rr is a good compromise and because it's hard less punctures, I trail ride on mine regularly, the problem I have with the 690 is it likes the throttle twisting and I found with the tyres I use on my crf the cst surge i tore knobbles and with the IT that didn't even last 350 miles.

Dunlop d908rr on the rear, don't use the front they seem to make the bike shake from side to side over 60mph.
I've got about 4500miles on my rear and admittedly it's had it now, the front got binned as soon as I could get a different one, currently a maxis it which is wearing fairly quick.
