Morocco--Green Card Insurance

Post by Peejay »

Been on the phone to my Ins. Company (BMW) and as expected they no longer offer a green card for Morocco, unless on a BMW organised tour.
As I'm not, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a UK based company that I can obtain a Green Card from without buying the whole policy?
Or am I going to have to buy insurance once I get there?

Think you may have to buy it there Peejay, but not sure how good the insurance cover will be. Not sure that I could trust the insurance there to be worth the paper it's written on, but someone on here will hopefully be in the know.
When I was there last October, 4 guys had accidents. One was settled on the spot with cash.....with the local mayor!
The other 3 guys made claims when they got home saying the damage happened in the UK.
Personally I wouldn't want to risk that, but luckily I'm with Carole Nash so I can pay extra for Morocco cover before I go.

You can't get a seperate green card from another insurer here, it's not possible. It's either from your own insurer and if they wont do it you have to buy 3rd party insurance when you get there (which is fully above board and all legal and official). You MUST buy it too, if you have an accident and a local gets badly hurt, if you cant produce the insurance cert they put you in a local jail until its sorted (sorted meaning you pay the person a lot of money).

Thanks Laura and Mike.
It was a worth a shot. I was expecting to have to buy it there so no real suprises.

I know it must be obtained over there in case the worst happens, and I know its pretty worthless as an insurance.

BMW said to ring back at the end of April as things may have changed by then. I'll not hold my breath.

It's only third party. You can't get fully comp there. Some firms over here will extend cover (it's not called green card anymore) for morocco fully comp but its rare. Seems to be based on which way the wind is blowing as to whether they will give it to you or not.

Agreed. Wishful thinking on my part. ;)

I had to buy it there Peejay. 2 years ago so worth searching.
Not having any proper insurance or breakdown cover really concentrated my mind.

You can get breakdown cover including repatriation to Europe through ADAC. They now have a UK office.

Bear in mind though that they wont recover you from a mountain track or the desert, but the locals will help with that anyway.

Maybe there should be a morocco tips thread

That's good.
For those who don't know ADAC is (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club e.V.)

Good idea for a Morocco "reference" thread. There is loads on the forum it needs pulling together.

hi peejay
i never bothered with insurance when i went to morocco its not worth the paper its written on. As bonniebird mentioned earlier i was the one who crashed into the mayor of zagora. my fault completely he was only interested in how much money he could get out of me didnt even ask for insurance paperwork. as is only third party you cannot claim for any damage to your bike so thats why i never bothered and many people i spoke to who have been to morocco say the same damage to the car only cost me £250 pound lots of damage to the car though.
