Wanted. First big bike after Direct Access. Budget £1000.

Post by Duncan Mountain »

Wanted. First big bike after Direct Access. Budget £1000.

I am currently taking lessons and soon will have my full Motorcycle license. I plan to buy my first big bike in April when the student loan comes in.

Due to Direct access course costing a fair bit and the money I’ll have to put aside for insurance (22 year old with one year’s no claims), I have been left with a small budget of about 1000 pounds to buy my first big bike.

Most of my riding is within Edinburgh during the week when I’m working. I teach guitar and music theory and I need a bike that’s comfortable with the stop/start riding that living in a city brings.

On the weekends I would like to go and see the sights that the UK has to offer and on longer holidays have some trips into Europe. Some of the trips I will be taking a pillion.

In the past 8 months I’ve put 4000 miles on my 125, so as you can imagine I would like to get a bike that’s not too bad on the petrol guzzling!

I have seen adverts for bikes like Reveres, Bandits, Er-5s. And I suppose they fit the pricing that I’m stuck with, but I would like to get something that’s more capable in going off the beaten track/Possibly some light trails.

I’m just putting this up to seek advice for what I should be looking for, and possibly if anybody wants to get rid of a bike for that kind of price. Offers and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well do look at that XTZ660 I have listed.

£1250 firm, but you can easily spend £300 on a chaep bike.

That bike needs for nothing.

Am ideal first bike, great handling, enough power with a sensible power delivery.

All the best Merlin

No advice on actual bike but do a good bit of homework, there are a lot of bikes out there and everyone has a different opinion on them, I'm a return biker so got a 600 Bandit for a year and just bought a Vstrom 1000, but dosent mean that route would suit you.
Try and get to test ride as many as you can, the right bike will come along soon enough :)

Fazer 600

lots about, so shop around. I've just picked up a one owner, full Yamaha history 2000 W plate model for £850.

Great bikes, but no good on the dirt....sorry

Since you are in Edinburgh, keep a look out at this dealers in Falkirk

http://www.morvenmotorcycles.co.uk/

He specialises in cheaper bikes. I was there a few days ago with a mate who is looking to get back on the road.
