Daily travel budget in Europe this year ?

Post by Scott_rider »

Now that everything has gone up in price, what's the general opinion on a daily budget for travelling on a bike in Europe this year? I know it depends on whether you camp, or cook, or stay in a 5 star hotel etc. etc. but just a general idea for a 'middle of the road' type of trip? (excluding fuel, which is easy to work out, depending how many miles a day are travelled).

We always used to work on £55 per night for accommodation and £25 per day for 3 meals...so £80 in total per day? (plus fuel)... :|

Reckon that's about right and cover for unforseen circumstances.

It all depends where you are.

In Spain for instance I can still keep the daily spend under £100 per day all in, but in northern European countries it is not always possible.

Yes, I find the bulk of money goes on accommodation but I don’t eat very posh.
Campsites are about £20
Lunch can be bread and cheese and a banana so £5
A salad in the evening or something light £12
So could get away with £40 a day

Alcohol is extra

When I rode up through Northern Europe I found fairly cheap hotels were in the region of £60 or so per night, but southern Europe was about £50.

I camp and just looked up my costs for last September, For 22 days I went through about €1,100 and that included my camping at municipal sites, fuel, food shopping and wines as well as various presents. I tend to bbq in the evening so its cheap..

To be honest municipal camp sites are between 10 and 15 Euros, and quality supermarket food is only about 20 Euros a day tops. With 70 MPG on a 250 fuel costs are only about 30 euros a day--so 80 euros a day all in suits me.

glad to hear this ....
I was going to say that in the good old days, lol, you may come across a field for £5 a night .. just the grass, and farm water, and some sort of toilet. It was enough, but its gone?... no !.. i seen some yesterday as examples for £10 a night, so cheap camping is still possible..... maybe even just doss in the Aires?
Good to hear food is reasonable in the French supermarkets, too.
At the previous prices quoted I could never go to France again, as on state pension, but this is very encouraging. Wild camping can be fined.. £1500 euros that is, so the pressure is off? (reading these cheapy prices)
Some Aires apparently, you can pay for but have all the facilities.

If I dont get to France plus wherever this year.. it may be getting too late, for an oap. lol.
My NC750 can do 77mpg her in blighty .. probably 90mpg, on D mode, in France, with its long easy roads.
I just bought a summer jacket for £65 .. waterproof allegedly, though a bit sweaty I think, as polyester, but has vents.

I wonder what the cheapest channel route is... ferry at night, out of season? .. or just take the Chunnel by rail, strapped to the chassis (the bike i mean lol) .

cheap cheap cheap ..... just like me lol.

The Ferry is generally cheaper. I've done it for £60 return, at a non-popular time. The Eurotunnel is dearer at £90 to £180 return, but their prices do seem to fluctuate depending on how busy they are.

(the Dover/Folkestone to Calais routes).
