A great section of the 281 from here as it makes its way along and down a deep gorge. At Puentenansa it's the CA-182, CA-280 & CA-183 to Reinosa. From here it's the N-611 north, then a right onto the CA-716 - which after a few miles becomes an unsurfaced (and dusty) section of road.
A nice sheltered area by a lake presents itself for a stop and an opportunity it get the stove out and brew up
Picos & Northern Spain. 3rd time lucky.

We continue on the 716, then onto the CA- 710 & right onto the CA-712, follow to the end and left onto the N-623 for a short distance then right onto the CA-263 to Vega de Pas. Here it's the CA- 631 & left onto the BU-527 to Portillo de Lunada.
This was a fantastic area - excellent roads & outstanding vistas plus very little traffic - highly recommended & worth spending a couple of days exploring - not for us this time unfortunately- but if I was coming back here this area would be a definite to be based for a couple of nights.

The BU- 572 becomes the CA-643 after you pass the summit at Lunada. Further along and we stop in the small village of San Roque de Riomiera. At Taberna El Tascon we get a nice selection of bread, cheese, salami, croquettes and fried baby squid served by friendly staff - delicious & highly recommended
The squid in particular was delicious- it came with the tentacles too - I don't normally eat these but they too were lovely

After our break its North on the CA-260 to Lierganes then a bit of zig zagging via more CA roads to Laredo.
A great variety of roads covered today - mountains and lovely mature broadleaf forests starting to take on their autumn colours with great biking roads through them
We booked in for the night and dandered into town along the seafront After a few drinks we eat at Los Dias Raros - great food and the barman/waiter spoke good English
A nice end to our last full day in Spain

Thursday 6th October
Headed out of Laredo on the CA 500 & 501. A stop for a look over the bay Also included the Bl 630 & CL 620 before making our way back up into Bilbao and out for our last meal in Spain at the wee village of Zierbena which is just round the corner from Bilbao Port.
We availed of Asador El Muelle - the grilled Sardines were very good.

Ferry left on time - with a full house on board
It was a rough crossing with almost everyone opting to strap themselves into their bunks
We killed a few hours at the back with a music quiz courtesy of Spotify and a bottle of wine before retiring for the night

Ferry arrived on time at 8pm the next day at Rosslare.
I opted to stay overnight in Rosslare whilst the rest made the dash up to the North.
Saturday turned out a lovely day and I detoured back through the Wicklow mountains on the way up
Lough Tay never fails to impress
