Hi thanks for all of the useful comments and invitations, I am amazed at the amount of replies, this is a lively forum.

I have managed to ride a few trails that I have found fairly locally using OSMaps and ABR magazine features, and absolutely love it. I will definitely be joining the TRF soon, both to hopefully join some ride outs and also to find out where the local trails are. I must admit, despite a competition background a long time ago I prefer take a relaxed pace now and enjoy the countryside so not to keen on riding in large groups with competition bikes.

Much as I am having my ‘issues’ with the TRF at the moment, at this stage joining is well worth it.
OS maps are never up to date and should be treated with extreme caution. Always look at the Highways’ Rights of Way maps and list of permanent and temporary closures.

Your local group should welcome you and show you round but don’t act as though you are just there for route maps.
People will happily share info if you show committment but not if it looks like you’ll just clutter off once you have the info.
