What aftermarket shock options are there for my XR400?

Is the oem Honda unit rebuildable?

I did think of Firefox, as they're local too
I will call them, first week of Jan to discuss the options

Honda XR400R Rear Shock options?

Post by johnnyboxer »

Managed to 'bag' from Ebay, a WP (White Power) Rear Shock in good condition last week for the XR400 for a reasonable price, which was a rare find, as they are hard to find

I will try it on the bike and see how I get on, plus it'll allow me to get the standard Showa rebuilt/serviced and re-valved etc and maybe a change of shock spring and free off the rebound adjuster that is seized solid :ugeek:

Next will be a front fork service, new oil and some Racetech Gold valves, plus upgraded springs - will get Shocktech (from Sheffield to do it, as they are the Racetech importers)

Hoping to revolutionise the XR400 suspension, making it plusher and more progressive

Well the WP didn’t work out and I sold it
Mainly for 2 reasons
* It raised the ride & seat height by about 2”
* being an old design it would be harder to rebuild

So a few months ago I managed to pick up a brand new NOS Showa XR400R shock from EBay

I will now respring the original shock and service it

Got the suspenders done and the bike is a lot better with new springs front & rear
Will see if we can further improve it with a re-shim in the future

JB,
What spring did you go with on the back bro ??
I'm needing a stiffer rate for my lard arse(110kg) plus the ability to throw some light camping gear on the back once I gusset and strengthen the subframe.

I will need to check
It was an Eibach and I think I went up to a 6.8kg one
Will check the invoice
