Been 4 times in the last 5 years and going again next year. It's not all it's hyped up to be but it is a really good winter rally with a great atmosphere and I don't know anybody who's been and didn't enjoy it.
I'll be going with the usual crew but will post details of where we'll be camping, where to abandon your bike and what you need to survive the weekend closer to the event. You can take any road bike and honestly not worry about conditions because they plough the roads on a regular basis but what I'd strongly advise against is taking your bike onto the rally site unless you've got proper off road tyres and don't care if you drop it. We always get there on the Thursday afternoon so we can put the tents up on something resembling flat ground and then leave on the Sunday morning after the majority of people have cleared the road for us.
Depending on where you live in the UK we've found that the best route is to use the Harwich - Hoek ferry leaving on the Tuesday night, stop Wednesday night about 100 miles from the rally site and then amble through on the Thursday. We always stop at the same place on the Sunday then get a Monday night crossing home so there's no real time pressure and you get the whole rally in.
pm me if you want more information and I'll do all I can to point you in the right direction. It's a bit of a steep learning curve the first couple of times but after that you know what to take and what to forget about and you also learn the benefits of getting there early and buying bales of straw to put under your tent.

If you fancy taking your chances with the German police then screw in studs are an option that work well on ice but any off road biased tyres will cope with snow perfectly well.Morph wrote:This guy's got the right idea, outriggers! Can you get snow chains for bikes in the UK?
