WANTED- Adv Bike £3k Budget!

Hi all,

Having just returned from a 5000 mile trip to Morocco and back, my BMW R850GS appears to have given up the go and is looking like a potential write-off.

Therefore, I'm looking for a possible replacement bike around the £3000 mark. Another BMW ideally, but very interested in KTM's or Teneres. Anything that can comfortably deal with motorways, but capable on green lanes a few times per month. Mid-sized engine ideally as I'm on an A2 license.

I live between Bournemouth and London, so someone local would be great!

Fergus

Hi Mike, I saw that the other day; it's probably the bike of my dreams, but yeah, unfortunately a little too expensive, especially if my GS can't be sold!

£3k- £3.5k if needs must; having just spent nearly a grand on the GS I'm a little short!

What is so bad with the GS that it's a 'write off'?
£3k isn't going to get you much so you might still end up spending more.

I would have a serious calculation on what it would cost to fix yours before rushing to a potential money pit.
£3k to go trail or enduro riding locally is one thing.
Spending that to go adventuring may be a bit riskier.
Sometimes better the devil you know can be safer.

Catastrophic loss of compression diagnosed (50psi on both sides rather than 140psi when healthy), so looking like new piston rings/engine rebuild, along with some electrical gremlins that have sprung up.

The R850GS is 17 years and 90k miles old, so spending upwards of £1000 to repair a bike barely worth £2000 would seem a bit mad, especially having just splashed money on it very recently!

The Tenere is really interesting me; I've heard it's brilliant off-road and pretty capable on it for a single.

Reluctant to move away from a shaft-driven bike though, I'm far too lazy for chains!
