Calais. Are there still problems there?

Post by Godspeed »

Hoping to head to Europe through Calais in July.
Obviously there was a lot of trouble with the migrant crisis last year but I haven't heard much about it over the past few months.
Is there still a problem there? If so, how far away from Calais do I need to get for an overnight stay to escape any trouble?
I'll be on my C90, can't really outrun any problems :)

Depends what you call problems.......we use tunnel frequently in our motorhome and cars...never any agressive behaviour...its like a fenced in area :woohoo: looks horrible...the immigrants are between calais and belgium if any at all...

We sleep overnight in supermarket carparks in camper with no worries in area...its mostly media hype...campsites are safe .

yes you will be on a c90, when you exit the dock and turn off into the town . you havent enough power to be riding on the dual carriage way and you may end up with a nice escort off and fine. c90 are great fun in france been over with a few to chimay for the classsic racing. there more police than wild campers in calais so no problem except thing might get nicked from your bike if left ..

Cheers!
What speed do you need to be going on the dual carriageways then?
I've ridden on motorways here for a junction or two if needed. Can get around 50mph....

Went through from France yesterday--all the jungle has gone, traffic minimal, no police presence and no wandering migrants---the French are doing the passport check first with armed soldiers and checking any wagon, trailer etc--but really no problem. I was on a 250 Yam WR250R and as long as you can cruise at truck speed you will be ok on the payages--but basically stick to N and D roads etc. If you have a decent satnav (e.g. Garmin Montana) then you can program it to avoid motorways/payage--and in any event always go for the green or white signs , not blue. Just do a bit of route planning and do a tankbag list of towns and follow that, and you will be on "sensible" roads with better scenery, and more stopping places. To be honest northern France is "big country" and keeping to the backroads is far more entertaining than wide open fields.

Why are you going via Dover Chris? Bristol to Dover on a C90 will be hard work. If it was me I'd got via Portsmouth to Caen and then take the back roads across France, so much more enjoyable.

Nearly every French town has a municipal campsite and they're dirt cheap with all the facilities you need.

Good site here, or speak to Russ (tramp), he knows what's what with France.

Following the dismantling of the 'Jungle' the problem is now more around Dunkirk. If you do get trouble, it will be when leaving France.
