Me and the Good Lady Bill will be in Inverness on Saturday morning to start the NC500 in our motorhome. Hopefully later in the year some of us will be doing it on the bikes. Avagudun.

Nick.

Intrigued by this as I'm currently in a wheelchair and learning what it's like. Have you some ingenious way of carrying the wheelchair? If not how will she manage?

Sorry I didn't get a photo last weekend of a wheelchair user on a bike.

Kawasaki GTR with a side car on it, also a towbar as is fully legal, towbar mounted bike rack on it and the wheelchair hanging on the bike rack, all neatly sorted.

As it happens I have a towbar for my K100 which has the standard ball hitch which will take any towbar mounted cycle carrier. I have it for a trailer in the making but it would of course serve other purposes. Again, a wheelchair would happily hang on that and weight of both does not exceed the towbar nose weight limits. Even better, its all bog standard equipment just used in a slightly different way.

For quite a few years I was involved in teaching some wheelchair users sailing to the point where they could sail and race competitively single handed and its pretty much the case that the limiting factors are in the human mind. If you use a wheelchair and you want to go on a bike, go sailing or other activities like that its generally possible but you have to work on a case by case basis. Lots of specially made bike gear out there, left hand gear change [scooter style] or electro servo motor gear changes.

I have also seen another bike again with a 'sidecar' which was basically a platform to carry his wheelchair where the rider rode his electric wheelchair up a small ramp on to the flat of the side car and transferred across to the bike using the help of a post mounted on the sidecar. The ramp formed the back of the sidecar when travelling.
