Hi Nigel, I'm over on Buckshaw Village, I've been wanting to get into the trails for a couple of years but never quite got around to it. I'm on the look out now for a bike for the trails so once I'm sorted I'll be up for exploring some local stuff. I have a magazine review of the one and only Rivington trail, PM me your email address and I'll send you a scanned copy of it

just had a look on the map and g earth, just off the a58 wigan road 1 mile past ma pharmachem nice little track jacksons lane for about 2 miles across to the a6 traffic lights that go onto the rebox bolton fc ground.
just loose gravel and quite a senic ride, local opened gate for and there are no signs, give it a go
