How many bikes do you need?

In reality i only need 3

a) Adventure Tourer - the 1150GSA does it all, in comfort and style

b) 400cc Trail/Enduro bike for green laning

c) Trials bike (not strictly necessary but nice to have and ride)

I don't think I could manage with less than 2

I don't see the need for a 600cc dualsport anymore as on road the GSA does it better and will do some steady trails too

Offroad and a 400cc or below bike, does that so much better than a 600cc dualsport

So a 600cc offroad bike is a mismatch and in reality is good at neither

I have three, but a few weeks ago, due to various factors, not one of them was roadworthy...

So, how many bikes do I need? How many do any of us need?

n+1 (where n = the number of bikes we already have)

Dave

I used to have three, a ZZR600E, a DR350, and my R1150GS.

I did 97,000 miles on the ZZR in eight years, eventually giving it to my son, as I stopped using it after getting the Beemer.

The DR I used for green laneing etc, but eventually got bored, plus it was sooo uncomfortable for anything over 29-30 miles.

That leaves me with the 1150, a fantastic bike that I've now owned for 14 years.. have no wish/need for any other bike.

I've got 5. Don't need them all, but like having them.
Honda Varadero 1000 (Touring with boss).
Kawasaki KLR 650 (Playing)
Suzuki GT 500 (Mad 2 stroke).
Honda CB400NC SD (chilled sunny Sunday spin about town).
Vespa PK50XL (nice to look at and show, when finished).

I want a mad 350/450 green lane machine, and, RG500, Honda 90 with 140 stomp engine, Norton (old and new), BMW sidecar outfit or Ural outfit and KTM 640. That's off the top of my head (thumbs)

How many bikes do you need?
I disagree with the OP's assessment. I think a 600cc duel sport is probably all I'd need.
Up grade the suspension on Suzuki DR 650, Any of the BMW offerings, KLR, XR, XT etc....and it'll tackle most off road/rough road situations. You can load it up and go round the world.
But, I don't have a 600cc duel sport. I have bikes that are a bit better at different ends of the biking spectrum.
GSA.....Better at road touring.
KLX 450r and KTM450exc....More exciting and easier to ride fast on the rough stuff.
Then my GS800. Mine's past its first flush of youth, it's not mint but it's sorted and does anything.
I would say a GS800 is a better all round package for the solo rider than the 1200.
So to contradict myself....I don't "Need" a 600 duel sport I just need a GS800, but it's not about need is it?
I also have a Husqvarna 250 it was cheap and I was curious.
DRZ 400e, every home should have one.
XL125 and XR250r Simple and cheap.....they live out in Bulgaria.
Oh....and a Ford Transit Van. The best accessory you can buy for your off road bike.
But if I had to, I could off load the lot and make do with the GS800....I'd not be happy though.

I need a sportsbike for hot Sunday morning backroad blasts so I have gsxr 1000. I need a midsized adventure bike for touring and exploring so I have an f800gsa. I need a nippy enduro that doesn't have to be trailered everywhere for off-roading so I have a ttr250. I need something for going to work on so I have a vfr800.

I could do with another three bikes but I don't need them...
