Brother had a series 2 when we were kids, basic even by Ford Escort standards. A laugh off raod but painfully slow, noisy and well just painful for most of the time. I remember his having more play in the steering than my Dad's Mk1 transit and that's saying something.

At two miles an hour on a steep slope they are brilliant. On the road they are fun for the first 30 seconds but then miserable...
I remember the old cadet one we had made it about 2 miles before the cab filled with thick black smoke. We pulled into a petrol station and turned it off but the engine kept starting itself as it was so hot? Eventually we worked out the smoke was caused by the spare tire on the bonnet melting. The air vents were making it worse...

And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

I have to disagree with you on that.... I have had 3 new Defenders 110 XS's over the last 12 years, and about to get another,I have probably covered 120K miles in them all, I have never had any problems, regularly get 30 mpg, cheap to insure, service etc undoubtedly the BEST family run around ever.

They say 75% of all land rovers ever made are still on the road.
The other 25% made it to their destination

Re: Got to love those old Land Rovers
Back in the early 90's, on a whim, i bought an old 1962 series 2A SWB 2&1/4 petrol. It had been renovated and almost looked like a new Landy. The spheres were pitted and it kept going through seals plus a catalogue of other probs that i kept having to get repaired. I was constantly throwing money at it. Also went touring around Devon & Cornwall in it.... at a horrendous cost in fuel. It did look damn cool though. But it was a love hate relationship, similar to the one i had with an old 70's V Dub bay camper i also once owned.
That was my one and only venture into old Land Rover's.... and it will be my last.
