Buying tips please 950 Adventure

Well you lot were not much help in putting me off buying one.

So i'm off to see one very soon.

I know how they should feel and ride as i've been on a well sorted one but what am i looking for.

I've been told the fuel taps can rust up?

Is there anything else that i should watch out for when i see it.

SEAT - find one with a decent seat as the stock one is a plank

Renazco is much vaunted and certainly favoured

Thats a great offer thanks. I did 30 miles on one last Sunday so got the feel of it quickly so thanks but i donlt need another ride.

But i might pop down and say hi so you can talk me through ownership.

I know about the clutch slave going and this has been replaced on the bike i am looking at.
The pipes have been changed as well and it ahs full luggage.

As you've said, fuel pump and slave cylinder change? Corroded spokes, bent rims?
Proper KTM service record helps (not usually complete on a 950, which is getting on now - more likely partial.
Drop battery cover (2 bolts/2 minutes) to check state inside. Often indicative of care/maintenance or lack of it and if manky with corrosion, can cause issues.
+ all usual things.
Personally, I'd give equal attention to checking the seller - his use of the bike and likely approach. Looked after they can be great bikes, not looked after and they can be dogs.

Its supposed to have full dealer service history..if thats the case it might be OK.

I never had corrosion issues with fuel taps on either bikes. however it makes good sense to coat them in GT85/WD40 given their position. (BTW new taps are only about £7).
For areas to look at , go to ADVRIDER, Orange Crush, Halls of Wisdom(HOW) full of 950/990 info tips.

For an older bike, I'd look closely at the exhaust, particularly the 2:2 collector - look at the brackets that mount to the frame, it's a difficult area to clean so lots of early bikes are starting to corrode/fatigue at those points.

The starter solenoid is mounted low down on RHS, under the bashplate - its connections can suffer from corrosion if not maintained - causes a variety of failure scenarios!) Easy to fix and prevent.

If it's been off road, check the front rim, the rims are soft, the bike is heavy , add gravity and...Ding!

Other than that, treat as any other bike.

My experience was that they are tough, well designed bikes. Spares are well prices and quickly available. They withstand off road crashes well - better than I do!

Get a well looked after one - you'll love it! (thumbs)

Don't be overly alarmed if you stop after a run then restart and it sounds like a bag of spanners that's normal. :huh:
