BIKES - How much £, is too much?

Post by johnnyboxer »

Having been to the launch of the new 2014 BMW's and seen the new bikes, all sparkly and more importantly the prices

R12GSA WC - Base bike £12600 and full spec £15350 - before you add a SatNav or kuggage

RNineT - Base bike £11600 and fully monty £12600 with grips and a fancy seat hump only for the extra £1000

R12RT - Base bike £13200 and full spec £15390

Most riders seem to be going for the full spec, which at over £15k is some serious dosh - without any luggage

I'm sure I could afford one, if I paid £200/month for an Options scheme with a balloon buy back at the end, but do I want to saddle myself with a loan for a bike for 3 years and spend £7500 on just 'renting' it with nothing to show for it, in 3 years time

So..............are bikes 'worth' over £10k, in reality???

My self imposed limit for a new bike is £10k and since this was passed in about 2007, I haven't bought one since, especially when there are some cracking used bargains about

How long can manufacturers keep charging ridiculous amounts for new bikes, that are spiralling ever upwards

As long as folk keep buying them.

£5,500 is my max so far, for a new F650GS back in 2004. Not bought new since, and currently getting by on a 2000 GS I picked up for £900.

Riding is what really counts, after all.

Yeah, mental isn't it. The one weird thing is that with all those crazy prices (KTM, Ducati, they're all at it) it makes things like a brand new 650 Versys with luggage and all the trimming look flippin cheap at about £6.5-7K. It'll do everything a GS will except empty your bank account and make you look like a king when you pull up at the lights. Mind you, the GS is so big you can't get through the gaps in the traffic to actually get to the lights so that doesn't matter anyway

I still want one though!

To me all those figures are in dreamland !!
The C90 was £500 and the CB250 was £400. Both those bikes have given me endless pleasure and i don't have to worry if i drop them. Nice.
But i didn't buy them to not worry, i bought then 'cos i could afford them and the fact that they didn't cost much actually goes some way towards increasing my satisfaction with them. Both these i can fix myself and i enjoy that. For me the thought of having to get someone else to fix my bike for me is awful  And too costly.
When i go to the bike cafe and see all those bikes all shiny and gleaming i have to think to myself, well the bike industry is doing OK, but it just ain't for me.
BTW went into a HD dealer, just to have a look....

I agree....although have to say that Yamaha have priced the new MT07 really low.....is it a loss leader or a new trend.....somehow I doubt it will herald an era of lower priced bigger bikes

a lot of it go's over my head anyway, I paid £2500 for 57 Versys 3 years ago. its done 15k miles in Europe and another 20k here, I couldn't have enjoyed a more expensive bike any more than I have this one....its still smart, runs well, and would keep for another 3 years easy.....however not saying I wouldn't have a new bike either... I suppose its relative at the end of the day to your income.....like you I could do a deal....but its much nicer paying cash...and theres some cracking 2 year olds out there of any make

but I suppose you are saying....does value for money still make sense....its lost its middle ground somehow....

My thoughts too, with the dosh spent on new bike...... spend it on ferry tickets and fuel

Have only ever purchased 1 new bike and broke my £5k budget by adding luggage. Lost £2k two years later when I sold it. Wouldn't ever buy new again and couldn't imagine spending £10k+
I think it's just a matter of good selling techniques & partly to do with the want it / get it society.

For me buying something for 5k or a lot less that some has paid 10k plus for and the spent ££ on upgrades etc is very satisfying! Even tho my bike is my everyday transport I could ever justify the price tags some have now, let alone afford it and have money left to ride it any distance!! Buying 'new' isn't for me.

I have never brought a new bike or car for that matter, it's the immediate deprecation that gets me, so a bike a year old, run in, still under warranty and a lot cheaper (thumbs)
But I can see the appeal of a new bike, so it's all yours, but the first thing I do with a bike is get the spanners out  .

Must admit I paid over £11k for my 9mth old explorer last march, took a lot of coming to terms with tbh, my previous bike I bought new @ £7500 so quite a bit more.

It's a lot of bike and you can see where a bike like that absorbs the money with all the tech etc.

I won't be spending that much again though, I want to upgrade my second bike in the future or add a third so would rather do that than spend more on a new bike.

But, £15k for a bike is crazy IMO, I didn't spend much more than that on my car.
