Hi Miket, how long are you intending staying in Russia? The only reason I ask is that it isn't cheap (£125 per visa). As an alternative, you can take the ferry fromTallin, Estonia to Helsinki (quicker, and way less hassle).

you have to register each place you stay most hotels will do this on your behalf, sometimes a charge for this and sometimes not. Also sometimes you have to insist that they do register you, if how ever you are camping they will so i am told allow receipts from cafe's fuel stops etc just so they can see where you have been.
When i was there in 2011 only one hotel as far as we know refused register and so there fore refused us a room, other hotels said they were full, true or not i do not know.
We had no problems with the police or register infact never asked for it . I have tried to attach a JPG photo of one but it won't even load into add file bar, i shall keep trying
Yeahhhh it loaded

you can get a transit visa in finland that will give you 4 days to get out of russia. alternative is tourist visa from embassy.as for registration you had to register within 72 hours of arrival but this has now been extended to 7 days so in theory you could be in and out before the fine and deportation deadline. This whole idea is a relic from soviet times.

be aware that russia and georgia are not exactly big buddies you may have tension on the border. but you would need a tourist visa for a week in russia
