Weekend bimble around the New forest.

Post by VR_Rider »

Been awhile since I have had the whole weekend off so when one came up Abbie (my wife) and I decided to sneak away for the weekend.

The ride down from Sussex was very wet, a bad time to find out that my BMW Santiago boot leeks. However once we made it to the Sammy miller Motorcycle Museum and grabbed a cup of tea and bacon sarnie the weather cleared up.

After a stroll around we took a ride to Milford on Sea on the smaller back roads. I was amazed (should have clicked) that you could see the Isle of Wight and the Needles from the cost.

On the Sunday it was back down to Milford on Sea and a walk to Hurst Castle. If you haven't been its well worth a visit. You park up and walk a mile and a half along a split to reach the castle.

Built by Henry the VIII the once small castle is now a large fort. Charles the 1st was imprisoned here as well as having troops stationed here during World War II

We had great fun exploring the fort. Fantastic value at only £4.50 per person and we spent a good 4 hours there. It was also great to spend quality time with my wife.

The weather certainly was better than the day before. We also had a nice ferry ride back to the bike.

This is all in my back yard and I know it all well.

Hurst castle is a great place. Best to go in a really big storm.

Great pics and next time you come down my way say hi.

But i did see you chickend out and got the ferry back rather than walk back.

There are some great roads and walks a little further east. Lepe point and country park has some great beach walks and you can see teh roads and loading ramps built for D-day.

A little known fact about the solent is that to this day over 90% of all the public slip ways were built for D-day to load tanks etc onto landing craft.

Another really good day out is Fort Nelson on Portsdown hill. it's a victorian fort that houses the national collection of big guns and cannons...best of all it's free to get in.

There really is so much to do and see on a 25 mile strtch of coastline that it would take a couple of weeks to see it all.
