Extended mudguard on F650GS

My F650 GS is working quite hard through the cruddy weather, and seems to be getting a fair plastering of crud thrown up by the front wheel. Various searches suggest an extended (lower) front mudguard might help, but then again, there are just as many results saying don't fit one as they muck up airflow to the rad.
Anyone?

The helpful people at BMW say that even a set of fork gaiters will upset the air flow to the radiator, never mind a mudguard extension

Do you have a single cylinder F650GS, or one of those confusingly named F650GSs with the 800cc twin cylinder engines?

BMW fitted a lower mudguard to the fork brace on the 2 Spark model GS, after 2004, but it is rather short at the rear, so only really useful at keeping the headlight & rider's face clean B) Touratech & I think Wunderlich made a lower mudguard with a longer rear section, that helps a bit, but could probably benefit from an extension too :P

Quite a few discussions on this subject have gone on at our friendly owners site:-

It's the 650 version of a 650 ;-) So it seems BMW don't want people to it one as they don't make it.
