Tank Range

When I left home this morning my fuel gauge told me I had 18m to go, I had the choice of going 2m the wrong way or 15m the right way to the petrol station in Alcester?
I chose the latter - Did our intrepid hero make it? . . .

. . . Yes he did, with 3m to spare! When I filled up the 20 litre tank, it took 19.93 litres, presumably that other 3 miles would have taken it to 20 litres?
I find this incredibly accurate considering the stuff is sloshing around & subject to G-force.

Anyway, to my point! 227 miles covered on 19.93 litres works out at 51.78 mpg.
I think that is pretty dammed good for a 1200 boxer twin with a fat bloke on board.

Can anyone beat this?

My YBR125 typically gets 90+ mpg (more if no motorways/gales), can go off-road up to a point, no dune-basher this one, and has toured the length of the country. Albeit, rather slowly.

Sadly my bandit gets only around 51/52 ish but is much less of a pain to ride on the motorway. My DT125R would only average around 33-35 mpg on motorways which is nearly a third of the YBR!!

But I suppose slowing down on the throttle winding would mean I'd get more.

my xt660z 2009 tenere does an average of 60 mpg to work and back.

My BMW F650GS 2003 gives my about 75mpg running around. More on a run, very happy with that

Sprockette, DTR125LC is a cracking bike! I wouldn't get great mpg figures out of it either, great fun for a 125! YBR would be a good commuter tho!

The Mighty Varadero gets around 50mpg which is good for a galaxian cruiser like the Varadero! Unfortunately the Ickle Beemer is about the same! I'm thinking it's my style of riding that's the problem! Too much playing around offroad and popping wheelies!
So, 230 miles to the light on the Vara, 30 miles left on dash, usually takes 22 to 24 litres to fill when I find a fuel station.

Think Appleby meant on an 1200GS, but maybe not, my Enfield 535 does in excess of 80mpg, with out even trying, 60+ on the Yam TT600, DR Big, I don't know but have done 220 on a tank full with quite a bit still sloshing around, on my Beemer 1150GS I reckon I've done well if I get 45mpg, glad she has an adventure tank on her, did an 800mile day on the way home from Italy last year, bloody long day, did it on a full tank and 3 more fill up's, lot of higher speed than usual m/way work, with plenty left in the 30ltr tank, don't fink I'll ever do such a long day again!!

Ah, but are you quoting US mpg to Appleby's UK mpg? If so then you may be closer to his result than you thought...

Must say that surprised me: I've only ever previously found stories of pretty abyssmal from the Vara, whenever I've looked on the net. Reminiscent of the Firestorm's typical 35 mpg!
