Is the tunnel open or is there another way there, we'd planned on visiting last week but only got as far as Kendal.

That will learn me to check the latest maps, I'd researched this many years ago as I like a good tunnel. I see it has now gone, it was a bridleway on my old maps. I believe that's a slag heap tipped over the tunnel and it's now been removed along with the tunnel, google Cocken Tunnel and there's a bit of history.
