Yeah I quite like a good debate, it is one of my reasons for coming on here, but at least I'm able to provide debate while respecting other people, something you seem to sorely lack.

It was last night ya knob :P

I'm not going to feed your need for an argument anymore, I probably will however get out for a ride and write a little report about it because that's what this forum is about Ralph.

If that's what the forum is about, why are you posting in a thread about petrol station rules? Even though you say you don't actually have any opinion about it? Feed MY need for an argument? I think you'll find you started it, by having a pop at me, which is the only thing you have contributed to this thread, so yes, getting out on your bike is a good idea.

The way I see it is would you not go to the petrol station if they told you you couldn't be on your mobile while filling up? You'd still go there because somebody in the past has caused a fire by their actions. Im guessing the same has happened with someone sat on their bike filling up. It's no different.
We moan about safety rules and regs but we are the first ones to claim against the companies when we get injured as there wasn't adequate warnings and controls put in place.
Shell are covering their arses.
Totally agree. I just can't see what they are covering their arses against.

Two risks as far as I can see, bike falling over, or rider overfilling, both resulting in spilt fuel, and resulting in potential for fire.

A bike is much more stable with a rider sat on it with legs down both sides, than it is on the side stand, which on many sports bikes is useless, and even a stiff breeze or a slight slope can send a bike over, or indeed accidentally knocking it while reaching for the nozzle, or tripping over the hose, or another driver on the forecourt clipping it with a car bumper. Especially the likes of Ducati, Benelli, the side stands are awful. Far less likely to have a bike go over while sat on it, than stood next to it. My mate with a 749 is paranoid every time he leaves the bike on it's sidestand.

If your such a muppet you overfill the bike you can do that standing next to the bike, just the same as you can sitting on the bike, and sitting on the bike you can see the level inside the tank much better. That one YouTube video we've managed to find would still have happened if the rider was standing next to the bike.

The only benefit I can see if there is a fire, which as 9 pages of no evidence proves, happens once in a blue moon, if you're not sitting on the bike you can run away quicker.

This was dreamt up by somebody behind a desk, who's never ridden a motorbike, it's nonsense.

Petrol stations get robbed far more often than they have fires, but Shell now say you can leave the helmet on.

When I turn up at the garage on my Husaberg, I'm normally caked in mud. The more petrol I spray over the tank the more it washes the dirt away from the filler cap. (thumbs)

Good job I dont smoke

If you're having trouble in the car with your windscreen wipers not sweeping the screen properly due to road grime, then petrol on a rag is a great way of cleaning the area of the glass swept by the wipers, just don't get it on the rubber wiper blades or seals, white vinegar is good for getting them clean.

He he brilliant ! I was trail riding in Norfolk once and we had recently forded a river. We fueled up in Waitrose at Swaffham...... I casually walked around the garage looking for a drink, when I looked down I had left wet muddy prints all over a freshly mopped floor. The cleaning person had rather a black look on their face. I did say sorry to her it was a right mess

Useful tip, I'll try that. (thumbs)

I had a 748 once and trundling down the motorway unknowingly on of the sidestand bolts vibed out..

Stoped to fill up at j17 to fill up in a forecourt. Sidestand down. Bang over goes the bike with 500 quids worth of damage.
