I find even the standard BMW panniers a real pain in town. I only ever take mine when my wife is meeting me after work and I have to take her bike gear for the ride home. Only take seconds to put on or take off.
Edit: And it's very annoying when some fat arse GS can't get through a gap and ends up blocking the road for everyone else!
Why do people ride around with full luggage on all the time?

You obviously don't need carrying/storage capacity all the time! I keep the topboxhusabang wrote:Can someone explain to me the benefit of keeping hard luggage on all the time...?
Is there some sort of advantage that i haven't discovered
Is it not removable?..
Or is it just for the look factor
Surely a 1200GSA with full luggage on is no more effective at getting through rush hour traffic then a Volvo 200?

and one pannier on my @ all the time since the bike's used daily and I need to take all sorts of stuff incl. work bag, big lock/chain, rain gear, lunch, survey gear, shopping etc. The single pannier, on the non-exhaust side, enables filtering without fear of not getting thru' gaps. The other pannier makes an appearance from time to time if needs be, and being a 21 litre box can double as a brief case as required. That's the advantage (although I take it the question was of course tongue-in-cheek!)

True, I'm far too polite but I do enjoy it when a scooter commuter vents his spleen on one of these wobbly wedges when it gets stuck.husabang wrote:Standard commuting problem, not always A gs thoughBeam me up wrote: Edit: And it's very annoying when some fat arse GS can't get through a gap and ends up blocking the road for everyone else!
For me a bike is all about mobility. My commute takes an hour whereas cars doing the same run take 2.5hrs. A small top box is all you need for your day to day stuff. When I go off round Europe for a week or two, if I'm on my own, one pannier is half empty (going) so I find it hard to imagine what people have in these huge aluminium boxes

I just keep the Top Box on the bike, in the top box I keep my puncture repair kit (stop & go kit) also have room for a bit of shopping, O only carry the panniers as & when.

I'm currently in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, and there are a few bikes here too. From my hotel it's about an hour to the Grassy Plains and not from the desert, so would make an ideal ABR Rally site. The hotel also has 160 girls all taking part in Miss World staying here - that's why I'm sat in the bar writing thisdavsato wrote:yeah, forget the panniers, did someone say ABR rallyMongolia? a MongBoil? no that doesnt sound rightP4ulie wrote:

Re: Why do people ride around with full luggage on all the time?
Mine are on all the time purely because I haven't got the floor space to store them in the garage, off the bike. I also keep them on all the time so that I don't get out of the habit of knowing how wide the bike is. Seen too many people put panniers back on their bikes for there summer trips and end up collecting wing mirrors because they are not used to the extra width!
I have recently deleted an account on another forum because of the negativity toward other riders and why people do what they do. Who cares, unless it is someone asking for genuine advice we should be happy that we all do things differently. Let's keep this forum in the hands of ABR's and not keyboard assassins.
Luv ya all, ride safe and most of all keep upright.
