Commuting, sadly that's how BMW marketed the bike and IMHO death a death blow to sales, but it is a great year round bike for commuting, economic, agile and über reliable.
Touring? Oh yes, I've done two month-long tours around Spain on the bike - each about 8,000 kms - and numerous long weekends where I rode about 3-400 kms to get to my destination - 400 kms is stretching it a bit but of you had a) some extra padding on the saddle and7or b) some extra padding on you bum you could be OK.
The only niggle I have is that I can't find a screen/fairing to fit as I'm beginning to find long runs at speed a strain on the old upper body, but that's largely because my upper body resembles a few pipe cleaners wound together with a lump of plasticine for a head ...

Simon, your X-Co sounds great but clearly it would need many modifications ti match the GP450 touring credentials. The beauty of the GP450 is the complete package can be ordered from the factory...oh, and also that you can still buy it

There are other bikes out there.....if you know someone that can build sub frames, or screens, or aftermarket tanks / fairings or you can even find one for sale.
I've already put a new engine in the CRF so I won't be going down the 300/500 route. It has 32000 miles & three winters on it so it's not exactly tip top.
I keep coming back round to the CCM

A good point Jonny - a big beef with all beepers is how much stuff you have to have as 'extras' - but all that was really essential was a set of H & B pannier racks, in fact I started out with a duffle bag on a H & B rear rack (having checked that I could add the sides later) a tank bag and a rucksack, then after a few weekends away the bug bit ... (thumbs)
It's a real shame that BMW stopped production, their marketing department are a bunch of twerps IMHO, but there seem to be lots on sale at the mo' low mileage, mint condition ...

I've done 400 miles on mine now, I'm away next week so I'll book my GP450S in for its first service when I get back.
It's having the power commander and carbon exhaust as well.
To be honest I'm quite happy with the power as it is now, but the bike will benefit from better low down fueling and a jump in Torque and bhp will be nice.
I like the bike, riding something so light and narrow is a real plus point for me.
There's a couple of minor issues that need sorting when it goes in for its service, nothing major.

I shall be up in Bolton on the 10th April for a test ride, bit of a journey from London, hoping it is well worth the bother. They've priced me for the full monty so a chat with the bank is in order.
This time next month I could well have a new ride, I'm hoping to have it run in for a 2000+ mile trip in July (thumbs)
