Whilst there are many who might think that the former Greek finance minister might not be the best person to give you financial advice his views on Brexit the other day on radio 4 made a lot of sense

And I can see their point. Invoking article 50 falls under making of international treaties, which are prerogative powers, the prime minister (government) can do that.

But that just triggers the process in the EU, under the Lisbon Treaty.

For it to become legal in the UK an Act of Parliament, The European Communities Act 1972 needs to be rescinded, and that can only be done by parliament, not government.

The government argues that the courts are not qualified to take decisions on Brexit, it should be left to Ministers, but the courts aren't presiding over Brexit, they are simply interpreting the law. The only question they are trying to answer is.....Do we legally need to put the decision to rescind the European Communities Act to parliament or not?

Anyway, if the courts are not qualified to take such decisions, and only ministers are, why weren't they left to make the decision instead of asking Joe Public in a referendum, who is even less qualified than the courts?

So what qualifications do we need to make decisions regarding our future.

Is it some sort of exam we take, if so I presume those already qualified have passed it.

Or is it just an "I am better than you" type thing that allows someone else to make decisions on my behalf.

Or even, because you, the ignorant electorate, voted me "IN", (in your ignorance, despite not being qualified to make any decisions,) and now as such, I am qualified to make decisions that you may not want me to make because you, the ignorant and unqualified lot voted for something that I do not want.

This may not make sense but I am sure you get the gist of what I am getting at.

It may be that I'm just reading the wrong news papers or watching the wrong news channels, but I'm getting the distinct impression that there are far more 'informed' persons commenting on how Brexit was not a good idea, and how the outcome won't be what was hoped for. Anyway, I'm off to southern France tomorrow, but sadly with far fewer euros in my pocket than I had recently become accustomed too.

I think a good grounding in international politics and world economics ought to be the minimum requirement to make decisions of this magnitude. I'm a (reasonably!) bright guy but I didn't feel that I was "qualified" to participate in the referendum and was extremely disappointed by the very poor quality of the information provided to me by both the exit and remain "campaigns".
Or is it just an "I am better than you" type thing that allows someone else to make decisions on my behalf.
This is a divisive and misleading argument because it implies intelligence=worth, which is simply not true. I might be more intelligent than the mechanic who fixes my bike, but that doesn't make me "better" than him, nor does it make me more qualified to make decisions on what needs to be fixed. Nor does it make him "better" than me, nor does it mean I respect him less than others who are more intelligent. Simply, he is better "qualified" to make decisions about my bike repairs than I am.

I don't like this particular argument because intelligence has nothing to do with whether some people are "better" than others and nor should it have anything to do with the respect we give each other.
Or even, because you, the ignorant electorate, voted me "IN", (in your ignorance, despite not being qualified to make any decisions,) and now as such, I am qualified to make decisions that you may not want me to make because you, the ignorant and unqualified lot voted for something that I do not want...
See paragraph 1 :)

Will Merkel bail out the German banks or play hard ball like she did with Greece and Italy, will the EU survive a German banking system crash ?

Germany's second largest bank states it's to dump 7000 employees and has suspended dividends :pinch:

Cheers Spud ;)

Absolutely....

You are better than me at being a police officer

I am better than you at IT consultancy (I assume)

Government ministers are better than either of us at understanding Brexit
