It a city you aren't reaching the speeds needed to create damaging wind noise. It's not just wind noise though if you have a loud exhaust.

Hi All
My Surefire EarPro EP7's arrived and I have now ridden using them (albeit not for elongated periods of time).
My observations so far are:
1) they are extremely comfortable
2) their locking mechanism ensures that they do stay in the ear and don't move
3) I am exceptionally pleased with the sound reduction
I have ridden with the lower dB bit in (in other words the max sound deadening) and I am very pleased with them.

Re: ear plugs or more expensive helmet?
I have to be honest, no I don't. Unless on main roads, I would tend to ride with my helmet (Evoline) as an open face, which opens up the surroundings to you.but don't you feel disconnected from the surroundings as I do?
But I can still hear things, just not the 'hum' from the road - one thing I have noticed is that my bike engine is clearer, and isn't lost in the ambient noise without earplugs.

You get used to it and learn to use your eyes, mirror checks, shoulder checks and lifesavers.robson wrote:but don't you feel disconnected from the surroundings as I do?Moorso wrote:Hi All

I can ride with earplugs in and music on my Sena and not have a problem knowing whats around me.
Its how deaf people spend their entire lives.

ear plugs or more expensive helmet?
Indeed-Ralph- wrote:I have a £470 Shoei and still needs earplugs.
I get the impression you are a youngish guy and still have good hearing? Don't feck it up, it's a pain in the arse and at only 40 years old myself I'm too vain and feel too young to go and get a hearing aid. I can't even watch TV in the same room as others because they find it too loud, or if there's dramatic bit with background music I can't hear the speech at all, so I have to watch with subtitles.
Just wear earplugs.
I didn't
Now my hearing is fecked at 50
Deaf in one ear
Tinnitus
Now wear moulded ear plugs at £100 a pop
Wish I'd done it in my 20's
Losing your hearing is permanent
Ride a bike - wear ear plugs then

Re: ear plugs or more expensive helmet?
I had ringing in my ears one night after being out on the bike, couldn't believe it. Have now got some spongey foam things to use, it has slightly helped. I am looking at getting the proper ones now, even though they are pricey I think it is worth it when it comes to your hearing (thumbs) Thanks for the advice.Toecutter wrote:Earplugs earplugs earplugs. Every time. I used to work in health and safety and could bore you with any amount of numbers and safe exposure limits, but i'll just say that I wouldn't even ride ten minutes to the shops without my plugs in. Quieter helmets definitely help, but the road and engine noise are still more than enough to cause permanent damage over time. I'm fine with silicon 'Christmas tree' plugs, my wife finds them quite painful after an hour or so and prefers foam disposables. I've been told the custom mounded ones are the comfiest, but as others have said, they're not cheap.
