But would it ? they have voted not to change. So they would have to change their public sector drastically 1 public sector worker for every private sector worker ?

A bit like our BBC £150 Million in the red and now they have decided that they have to stop the huge pay off's they have been giving out

You can't keep spending more than you generate for ever

I think running on Dracma with a virtual zero external purchasing power would focus the mind to increase it's worth which in the first instance could only be done internally.ie. self imposed austerity.

I see what your saying and would tend to agree with you but it would need a massive and fundamental change to the way of life, and they voted no.

I am not sure the EU is all it's cracked up to be in any case.

They have voted NO to the EU proposed austerity measures that have not worked for the last 5 years! Let's get the basics right. More than 80% of the bailout funds have actually gone into the banks in EUROPE not just in Greece. So no money given to "fund" changes.

I would have voted Yes by the way.

The changes in the public sector will not happen because that 50% are voters of the current gov and any gov that will not cut jobs in the public sector.

I think it's a lost cause and hence why I moved when I was 18!!

With regards to giving the loans...well it's the starting point for joining the EU. You get a cash injenction to do "development work" in the country. Then you have to pay it back somehow, someway etc. Very much a Wonga type of setup.

How convenient to blame the lender.

No mention of the blatant lies Greece told to get into the EU originally.
No mention of the refusal of greeks to pay taxes.

Greeks have partied away on the backs of those who contribute to the EU coffers - ie Germans, British and French.

It's time it stopped.

Of course they don't want austerity - tough shit! They are going to have it.

Happening now!

At last, the preening fool Tsipras is getting told a few home truths in the Euro Parliament - about time the other countries took the gloves off!

and....he doesn't like it. (thumbs)

And people like you fuel racism!

You must be thick as F* if you truely believe that Greeks "refuse" to pay taxes! It also shows your lack of understanding of the Greek Tax System and how you happily hide behind that lack of knowledge.

It was the Greek gov (corrupt as always has been) that cooked the books to ensure entry in the EU. Yes the people voted them in but the people have no understanding of country financials...you clearly don't.

I'll leave the thread now as I see how some people feel very angry about the average Greek Jo and feel strongly that they should pay!! Think of your views next time a government decision really affects your livelihood.

As sad as it is, Joe Public isn't going to influence any government nor any financial institution.
That's why I never vote, don't follow any news (other than a few bits maybe here and there on forums), don't watch telly, don't read papers and just try and be nice and happy, caring for people i like.
I feel a happier person for it.
It'll end in tears I tells ya.

Pointing out that reality needs to be faced isn't racism.

Dragging up German actions from WW2, which the Greeks have been only too happy to do over the recent months, to help their attempt to wriggle out of their obligations, probably is racism though....... (thumbs)
