heres the finished product ...

the engine is a bit bigger in the crown but jiggle straight in

you will need to extend the stator cables and change the loom plug
ditto that for cps cables and plug
ecu plugs straight in and all bays relatate to the crfs loom
injector and sensor unit are a jiggle but plumb staight in

any problems ? i had to reset the tps after install as for some reason it was out of sync ..procedure for the 250 worked fine

gearing ..smaller sprockets are not easy to get for the rear so a 15front was found from e bay usa the only place yopu can get one ..you need to skim the chain guide a couple ol ml but it will squeeze in ok
sprockets under 40 ..xr250r 90 to 95 will fit

at 15/39 the speedo reads around 5/6mph slower at higher speeds

heres a bummer t week there were no uk recalls on the cbr300r for the crank check ...and you guessed it three days after intsalling ..they recalled them in the uk 8 months after the us after saying there were no engines in the uk needing attention ...dam it as i checked before i bought it

me local dealer has done 8 recalls and non have been effected
given that there were relativly few failures 47 oout of 13000 ill just give it whilrl..but whata shame literally two days after installing it ..if the doner engine has ahad the recall done it will have a punch mark by the colour code sticker under the seat of the 300 so check with the breaker the mark is there

ok im done now ..put on a 15/39 and can finally ride the bike without the silly gearing on ...
i geared it backwards from 70mph ..and was not sure how it would go in the tight stuff ... quite pleasently surprised

the extra tourque with the exelent soft clutch makes general trail stuff easy ..2nd may be a bit high for real steep stuff i dont know yet as the touque is much stronger i need to get out to the lakes where there are some proper steep knarly climbs but 1st is a real nice gear i know that will work well with a bit of clutch here and there

tbo the original littel bike with the lower gearing did the job its a bit weak but geared right it does a pretty good job but the low touque and the 1st 2nd gap was always a pain when it got steep ..but that first would climb anything at all

..and this is just about the touque ..it will go over 80mph gps and holds a steady 70 at much reduced revs feels very very comfy and rlaxed at 65mph ..bearing in mind its pulling 7 teeth less thatn the 250l engine its done really well ...theres nothing now that makes me think to use the 250 box as a bigger jump to 6th would have me gear it down to compensate ..i honestly would say theres not much in it a cog on the rear either way reaps benifits either way on either box ..the gap from 1st to 2nd is spot on on the 300 (thumbs)

even with the tall gearing on it will potter fifth gear at 25mph ..its the ultimate lazy boy bike .. you dont want to lug it i know but its soft and easy mega flexable in any gear ..fifth will pull 20 to 70..thats pretty flexable ...the dilivery is still not snorting but good tourque not disimilar to a any xr low down ...im amazed on how good a trail bike engine it is considering its out of a sportsbike..the bike isnt that stable over 75mph anyway but the beuty of thengine is the ease of use

all in all im very very happy with the upgrade

i geared the bike backwards from my target speed of 70mph using the below graphs so 15/39 puts it at the top of the tourque curve at around 6800 revs with a 10500 redlane
the concern was how it would be in 1st and 2nd ..

the bike has loads more touque and the 300rs ist 2nd are lower so that makes it easier to gear up at the top end ..a 15/40 is exactly the same as the 300s 14/36
gear commader gives info but dont forget to change the wheel size to 120/80/18 ive left a extra link on the chain so i will be trying a 15/40 and decide from there balencing a small engine for optimal gearing is a bit of a fine tune job ...i think it will be a bit better off road and let the bike rev more and produce a little more top speed

its all about the touque on this engine top speed ..low 80s steep down hill with afull moon and the wind behind you maby 90 once it hits the top of the power curve its sod off no more ..but thats not the good bit

its just much more gutsy i every gear it will pull sixth from 30mph and just roll on and will sit at a true 70mph uphill with a headwind on the motorway ..its quite content at 70mph ..wind up the elastic band and it will pull well ..it just feels stronger and a bit more grown up less revvy and stronger tourque

there is no sign of cooling problems fan cuts in at 189 and it lugs no bother for a full hour 189/175 and never climbs above ..it shares the same pump as the 250l and the same capacity of coolant

heres the best bit

.and for all its drawbacks on paper the little bike holds a very low c of g and is the easiest thing in the world to ride slowly on ..and it climbs very very well ..this 300r really is a bonus as i never expected to guts up so well so low with tall gearing the gap from 1st to 2nd is now perfect and its proper soft and gutsy enabling to gear it high for the road but still a very very usful gearspread low down

amazing that it powers a sportsbike ..it should be labeled a xr300 not a cbr300 ..it really does have that xr feel to the motor..m and that is a very very good thing

i never had any trouble doing distance on it as a 250 so the 300 will be a nice upgrade ..the bigbonus for me is how good it is in slow off road ..it really is a cracking off road motor id say the fist gear is near perfect for knarly stuff not to short not too long and loads of soft power ..and a very nice connected soft clutch to help it along ...clutch is ace ..,accurate strong and one finger light .. you can stall anything but this motor will keep moving and trying from very very low speeds ..good soft engine but huge flex on it and absalutly novice freindly as well

..braaaap

sound quality is crap but heres me test ride first time out ... (thumbs)

no not at all ...anyone with a bit of basic knowlage could fit the engine with a few basic tools
the main concenrn was if it it suited the application in terms of delivery and gearing ..but all in all it worked out very well

i cant understanmd why honda dont fit it as standard as its much better on the road and off and it doesnt cross any legislation lines ..cc wise or power wise

trying to flip it and find any downsides to the 300 engine ..and i cant think of any at the moment .. (thumbs)

I would never even attempt this. I can unbolt stuff and refit it all back together but can't tweak stuff. Wish I knew how to use a lathe, cnc machine, cad programme, etc, etc, etc...

I'm also very good at copying others once they have figured stuff out but a new engine is a step too far....

Question for Minky .....just wondered whether you'd detailed anywhere the changes you've made to the standard CRF ( apart from the new engine) as i'd be very interested particularly suspension etc.
Also you said you'd paid 2.5k for a 400miler ....was it accident damaged or were you just lucky...seems prices are quite high at the mo even for a 2013.
many thanks

just dropped on it on ebay ...surprising thing was it was a main dealer but a ktm outlet it was november and i think they just wanted out of there it was the cheapest one by far the decals were peeling off and the spokes were a bit rusty ..i think it had been stored in shed or summet .by the fist owners missus id actually pay 2655 for it plus road tax

prices of the bike have gone up .. you could get a new one for 3699 at the time and mine was then two years old i think the 2017s are around 4300 ..there may be a drop in the 250s value as the 2017s have a bit more braaap and a few upgrades

changes ...all i think is needed is a better rear shock ..hyperpro or yss would do a good job
the front suspension needs a extra spring in the left damping leg ive found the recetch upgrade well worth the 100 quid cheap and effective 40percent stiffer sounds alot but they are proper soft to start with

i reshimed the rebound after the spring went in that was ...6 quid for some extra stiffer shims as with the stronger springs it was topping out now and then on rebound but it cured it ..and for generel trail riding it works pretty well rides quite nicley now
the only thing to take note of is the seat height will increase around 2 inches after youve done it so as long as you not short its actualy agood thing ..you will find the sidestand needs extending too
id probably ride as standard to start with see if you like it and just take it from there ..it really can manage a lot more than its given any credit for
all the upgrades are relatavly cheap to do ive spent around 1100 quid in extras but ..ill get back easy 50percent of that if i sell them on later .they will sell easily and quickly too
ill be keeping this bike a long time i think

one of the reasons the little honda works so well it how it delivers what little power its got ..use a 13 tooth front and it really does pick up and climb all sorts of unlikly stuff ..just dont bog it down and it romps up stuff
the below grapgh really shows why its easy to manage ..even the wr250 has missed the boat by a mile for my kind of riding weird that it has gobs more go than the much more powerful yanmaha and klx of the same power ... just in the right place ..we could probably get a good bike using the honda engine in the klx chassis

thats why the 300 engine is so good B) its making as much tourque at 3000 at the yamaha is at 7500 B)
