I always try to say thanks and give thumbs up, if the lorry/car lets me go past. But it is not always possible, especially in urban areas.
Also imho it is a good manners to give thumbs up to a driver who sees a bike behind him and leaves space in front of his/her car at the next traffic lights (thumbs)
