I might suggest that by asking us on the forum, you're looking for a bit of back up to justify it to yourself.

If you want it, and you've been looking for a while, then what the hell, treat yourself. If you're going to keep it for a while, a couple of hundred quid is neither here nor there.

Sometimes you wait and find a "better deal", other times you don't, and regret not taking the plunge when you had the chance.

Having worked in sales at a motorcycle dealership here's my take on it.

They have to make money or go out of business. Giving stuff away is not good business. Everyone is looking for high Part Ex and Buy Cheap. There has to be a balance which in reality is higher than most people would choose.

As has already been mentioned, it is quite likely they took it in Part Ex and there is not a lot of Mark Up as a result of the deal done. It's been sat there during the winter when demand is low. Spring is just around the corner and it will sell. They know that. If there was a lot of money sat in the bike and it was not going to sell, they would have Traded it on.

If you need clothing and or accessories then that's where you can get a better deal. Don't ask for things for free as that is no different to getting more money off the bike, which doesn't appear to be a prospect. But the mark up on these items tends to be much bigger and they will have more room to accommodate you. Likewise they can be more flexible with labour charges for servicing or having accessories fitted.

If you get a deal along these lines, make sure it is written down covering all aspects as memories can get selective after the event.

You will always pay a premium at a dealers and someone will buy it.

Pay them another visit and haggle a bit more. Don't push trying to get more money off the bike as after a while they will shut off to you. Most Salesmen are on commission which is not always on value but on units sold. However, there does have to be a profit in the deal for the company and the sales commission.

If it's the bike you want and you plan on keeping it for a while, go for it. If not, keep looking but remember, a lot of Private Sellers also have an over inflated view of the value of their bike and there is no comeback if all is not well.

Hope you find the right bike for you mate. :)

Thanks Ali,

I'm going to go back on Saturday and see what I can get gear wise. I've been checking out insurance quotes (bloody expensive) the last few days. Doesn't help I've got to go to Scotland with work on Thursday, but am back Friday, so I will get up there (if it's still for sale) and try and close the deal.

Thanks for your post, it was a help...

Best of luck with it, it's a great time buying a new bike, the promises of future adventures on new wheels, you can't beat it. :)
Never enough time and so much to see and experience.

Previously a VStrom 650, and a KTM SMR 950, currently XT600E with many mods. And now a F800GS Trophy since the KTM has gone.
