Fuel consumption

Me and my riding buddy both ride Explorers, before that 955i Tigers. We've toured many thousands of miles together all over a Europe. Having the same bikes mean we always fill up together. Every time we do, we notice that I use less fuel than he. I am bigger, heavier and carry way more kit than he does. However, my style of riding is a lot lazier. I'm straight to top and stay there. He uses the gears more, constantly up and down the box as conditions dictate. The difference is usually a couple of litres a tank in my favour. I'm guessing therefore this discrepancy is solely down to riding styles.
