On the subject of stopping to help other bikers - always.
Remember coming home from work one summer evening and climbing the hill in front of me was a young lad on a small bike (forget what it was) but he was having a horrid time as the cars behind him were pressurising him by being too close and he consequently was riding almost on the kerb so as to let them pass.
I gave him a wave as I passed then pulled into a lay-by about a mile further on to wait for him.
I flagged him down and explained that he should never ride on the kerb regardless of who's waiting to pass. Cars have enough power to overtake whenever they have a chance. I was watching him, and was hitting sunken drain gratings and they were throwing him off balance. Plus, the kerb area is were most of the road debris tends to accumulate which again will cause him problems or make him swerve to avoid it into the path of cars pushing through. I like to think I might have stopped a spill at some point.

I'll nod or wave to anyone from a learner on a bike(not a scooter though because you just know they're only putting up with a scooter until they can get a car)to HD riders(but I wait for them to wave first, which rarely happens).

Re: To nod or not to nod
I will always wave or nod and probably get a 60% success rate.
On my way to work I pass several bikers. Funnily enough most of these don't seem to return my nod or wave. I head South on the A417 and then A329 towards Reading. One guy however waves, salutes and virtually does a dance on the bike when he passes. He has a few bikes and rides all year in all weathers, even when I'm in the car. I think I even stood up on the pegs once as I went past. This puts a smile on my face and maybe one day I will get to chat to him.
One guy on the way home though is the opposite. I'm pretty sure he works at my place. He's got a faster bike and guns it most of the time. A few times now I've moved over to let him pass and not even the slightest acknowledgement. Pure ignorance in my view. This does piss me off. So now if I see him I will stay where I am and let him get on with it.
It costs nothing to nod your head or wave, so come on you non wavers. Get nodding!

Re: To nod or not to nod
It's a respect thing for me. I'm not gonna nod to an idiot riding in his vest and shorts!
Or a power ranger riding like a twat during one of his ten ride outs per year when the sun shines! You hear them at the cafe "yeah I've been riding bikes for 20 years!" ( 5 to 10 times per year on a Sunday morning!)
I do try with the cruiser riders but they're too busy looking moody to nod back
Definitely nod to the guys on the 125cc's, you can see how much they're loving the bike (thumbs)

Re: To nod or not to nod
In this country of social class it depends what you ride. Each group nods to each other, even GS adv riders ignore us lesser standard GS riders.
Now in euro land it's all equal no matter what you ride.
Cheers Dave.
