I use chafing fuel with one of these. Put the chafing fuel in a used sardine tin. Also use chafing fuel with an Esbit 585ml cooker using a round tin. Just carry around a tin of the chafing fuel with me. Have just bought a Coleman after reading about them on here so between these three should be sorted

My money's on the Patterdale if its owt like mine,
As to the lighting issue I carry a Zippo lighter and/or a zippo permanent match. I carry lighter fuel in a refill thing that looks like a small hip flask.
Stove is easy Trangia can't beat em in my humble opinion.

The solid fuel tablets require a flame to ignite as you're aware. If you carry some cotton wool balls covered in Vaseline these will ignite straight aware from a spark from a fire steel. These can be carried really easily in a small plastic bag and a key ring etc.

A fire steel will always work even when wet and you won't have to worry about running out of fuel or breaking the flint on a lighter.

I use a turbo flame lighter when camping. Wind and waterproof, never had any issues with it.

Refillable, with butane gas. Come in all shapes and sizes now and can get on Amazon for less than a tenner.

I have several zippo's,they even light in strong wind, had them since my army days and 1 is nearly 35yrs old, gone through flints but still on the same wick, as for the cooker, is it the army type, if it is, we used to lift a sod of earth up just smaller in size than the mess tin and place the cooker in the hole with the mess tin on top of the hole leave a space for air at the side of the tins, that way the cooker is out of the wind and it cooks faster, when your done just replace the sod of earth, it's worked for the army for decades and never been replaced.

It's been mentioned many times already but the fuel evaporates out of zippos quickly, but if you don't keep it in your pocket that will help. The heat from your leg will make it disappear even more quickly.

As far as flints go, you can get the genuine really cheaply off amazon or ebay and the holder wouldn't be a whole lot bigger than a 50p piece.

I have a few zippos and there is nothing more satisfying than that clunk click noise they make. Make sure you buy a genuine ones the fake ones are completely crap.

Alternatives to Matches.

I love Zippos but be aware that when they are well used the life of fill gets remarkably short. They do need. Good clean regularly.

Re the hex stove. I used them in the RAF Regiment in some serious weather. Half bury it if it's really windy.

Good tip is to get non stick mess tins. The hex stove will make everything black but a good scrub in leaves or on grass will get the worst off non stick pans. Also invest in mess tin covers as it will keep all your other kit clean.
