Hey.
Congratulation with your Montana units.
Great gear.
However, the Oregon is close to the Montana in structure, the way you use the units, the options etc.
And since a lot more people have purchased the Oregon so far, there's a great chance that advices from oregon users can help out Montana owners.
I have been travelling trans Europe (North-south and west to east) two years in row on my F800GSpot sith my wife on the pillion, using my Oregon 450T with CN and TOPO maps in use.
I have had service issues solved.
I have had map issues solved.
I have, to some extend, experience with POIs and the map structure in the unit.
I started Geocaching recently and I, therefor, participate in some Geocaching fora with great experience with these topo units.
I suggest you consider changing subject of this thread to include the Oregon series Garmin products for the purpose of people helping each others.

Battery tip
Stan's Montana and a few others have had problems with the unit's shutting down under vibration
When we got back from Pyrenees we looked at it again and cured the problem by taking the back off and putting some paper between the battery and the cover to prevent any movement - problem solved
Wish we'd have sussed this out there but then again it made us read and use the rally roadbook as our only source of navigation, which was great

Re: Garmin Montana/Oregon Thread
May I suggest to make a back up of the unit, everything in there, on a PC or, even better, on a storage device that you have with you on your travel. Then no matter how F**ked up the unit gets from map failure or software failure, you can get back to "year zero".
Re: Garmin Montana/Oregon Thread
I use a couple of old foam ear plugs in mine to stop the vibration shutdowns.Paul-S wrote:Battery tip

Re: Garmin Montana/Oregon Thread
Pity that in 10 years since the Streetpilot 3 they haven't worked out how to stop vibration & battery power problems
Re: Garmin Montana/Oregon Thread
That vibration/battery problem, is that when AA batteries are in use or is it the rechargable unit?
I don't seem to have such issues on my Oregon.

Its nothing serious, just not enough foam on the rear cover, not had an issue with mine yet, but will put some extra before long.
