Hey Martin, did you do the registration through the hotel, at check-in?
Please tell Yuri I'll be contacting him for custom clearance coming off the Ferry from South Korea next year  You know, I like to prepare well ahead of time...
The hotel say that they are registering our visas on Tuesday (Monday is Russia Day public holiday here). I did some reading up and it says that your host (in our case the hotel) has a legal duty to register you - they don't seem very keen to do it as it is extra work for them but make sure they give you originals and not photocopy. A few Russians have told us that registration is not necessary but we have read otherwise and it seems to cause problems further up along the road when trying to book hotels - if you have been previously registered then OK but if not then this is a problem. Also, we have been told to keep receipts along the way (fuel etc) so that we can prove that we did not stay longer than 3 days anywhere else (if you stay longer than 3 days in another lace you have to re-register your location)
We have already told Yuri that you might be contacting him next year - he enjoys practising his english - he is taking us to the Vladivostok motorcycle museum tomorrow.

There is a HUGE amount of construction of buildings and roads here at the moment in readiness for the 2012 summit so it should all be finished by the time you get here.
I think that you said your intended route was via South Korea on the Donghae ferry - you may be interested in this info. from the Vladivostok Times:
Eastern Dream Ferry Tickets from Vladivostok Sold Out
Families, groups of people and individual travelers from Primorye go to Korea on vacation
VLADIVOSTOK, June 10, vladivostoktimes.com Since the beginning of summer tickets for ferry between Vladivostok, Donghae (Republic of Korea), and Sakaiminato (Japan) are in high demand, as RIA PrimaMedia reports.
This year the temperature is already 25-29ºC which allows to start beach season. Primorians are ready for beach and very active in purchasing tickets for Eastern Dream ferry connecting Vladivostok, Donghae(Republic of Korea), and Sakaiminato (Japan). The ferry belongs to DBS Cruise Ferry.
“All tickets for June are sold out, and we have just a few tickets left for July. Everyone wants to spend time on the beach and that´s why they buy tickets in advance. Both individuals and travel agencies buy the tickets,” as the DBS Cruise Ferry office explained.
If they are going over they have to come back so it may be wise to book the ferry well in advance - Seouljoe is back in Korea now giving advice you may want to ask him about this on the Horizons site
Hey Thomas, Just spotted that the summitt here in Vladivostok is usually November but they are talking on it being moved forward to September, It is a major event for Vladivostok and construction on roads, airport, city bridges and the surrounding islands is going on and will be going on all at the same time for all of this summer and most of 2012.
If you are here in September heading west i think the roadworks will be the least of your problems -40c is not unusual !!!

Hello Mark and Martin,
thanx for the contact info for Yuri. So far I only had a phone number.
Concerning registration, the tip about making sure to get an original registration vs. copy was new to me.
Also good to know about the ferry pre-booking and the conference schedule for next year. I anticipate to arrive in Vlad around this time next year. Therefore, it should not become an issue
Enjoy your stay, I'll be following (virtually) closely

Hmmm. Now there's something you don't see every day!
Yuri, our customs clearing agent, took us out and about in Vladivostok today. One of the places we visited was the motor museum which had a few old bikes in there. There are just a few of the many pics I took.
