I did wonder if the remark was referring to me, though I could understand it if it was. I'm not as active on here as I could be. I guess I'm a serial lurker, on here most nights, just not posting because I like to read instead. As for the issue of advertising, I imagine it's a tough one for the mods, many shades of grey. Personally I think people would want to know about Austin's event, or any other event for that matter, so it's a public service in a way, even if you could class it as advertising. At the end of the day I think we're all sensible enough to know the difference between taking the piss and spreading the word about something relevant to the people who visit the site.

As an aside, I've just stripped my bike down and despite coming all that way, the only engine parts she needs are piston rings and a cam chain, which I didn't think too bad given how far she came. Parts arriving from Oz tomorrow, should have her rebuilt next week. Hope for better weather.

The rules are good, and if you ever look at Moneysavingexpert, or DIYNot forums, there is plenty of 'i don't work for them but' adverts that get through.

In my humble opinion, if the posters business is based in or around the 'trade' of Biking, then a post about their work is advertising. BUT how much harm this does to the value or monetary input of the magazine is not an issue. Not even sctratching the surface.
Magazine advertising (and I have booked a few ads in other jobs), IS by definition, bloody expensive when you do not have a business with good profits and regular £££'s turn over. The likes of Mr Vince and Mr Manicom are scratching a small living from their passion and 'work' and may not advertise at all in mags due to the costs.
From experience, once you start, there is no point stopping as a regular ad in 5-6 issues might start to bring in recognition and custom, but one ad once in a while will have little impact.

Though I think this forum is great, intresting, funny and informative give a little take a little will make it survive and the fact that ANY subject posted only stays on the front page for a day....... with due respect to the readers, members and ABR, that ain't gonna change the world.PS here is my invention want one ??????

Haha, never look a gift horse in the mouth as they say. But come on Red John, we've all got something to sell, even if it's only our opinions. I mean, can't I say anything about my trip, or talk about it, on any topic, simply because I wrote a stupid book about it?

Thanks Red. Cool that you're writing a book. I mean this seriously, but if I can help in anyway just pmsg me. I remember what a bitch it was writing mine. Makes the riding bit look easy. Best of luck with it.

Nathan and Sam are hardly likely to get rich over night from the sales of a few books to forum members, and if the money they generate allows them to travel and further document those travels then surely it is we travel-obsessed individuals that ultimately benefit from the enjoyment of reading about it.

I think most people on here know where the line is drawn. :-)
