About that all is far away from UK:
Consider the ferry to Santander.
Not cheap, but easy.
You get to the area of Picos de Europa.Direct. Without all that transport riding to the alps.
And also a short ride to the Pyrenees.

I’ve done that route a few times now, the only downsides are that it takes a long time on a ferry, and travelling on your own it can be a bit expensive if you factor in a cabin as well. However, like you say, the Picos is a wonderful area, not only for the lovely roads but also it’s so near to the ferry!

Normandy is a nice gentle area to get to. I think I may head over there a bit more this year…
