Thanks for the tips guys. I think they will be great in hot climates. I can't see a small single skin canvas tent holding out long in damp northern Britain. It would be going on my LWB shogun so the impact on the fuel wouldn't be much but I think suspension wobble would be a problem - if you have to fit bonkers or whatever it defeats the point of a quick pitch tent.
Right I have decided I am not giving them another thought - too many drawbacks against just a few benefits. But, if it was an African safari in a 4x4 I was thinking about......?

If you are in traveling Africa proper then they are a good idea. But if you are in a nature reserve you want to be able to get out the gate at first light to get the best games sighting. So having to break camp in semi darkness and pack it all away will be a chore. Another thing is that you might lose your ideal camping spot while you are out in the reserve so you have to leave some gear like chairs etc to show "this spot is taken" . Don't worry about big hairy things getting in the tent!
