Laminate woods won't be good, solid woods better. Drainage essential.

I know zilch about horse boxes but 'engineered' woods don't cope with immersion and wetting unless fully sealed against it and you can't do that as you say with a few frisky fillies fidgetting frantically on top of it. It works ok for boats because they are sealed in.
