Come on guys time for some realism...we have over 3million eastern europeans ummigrants in uk, Germany has millions of turks and now syrians...calais only has 9000 by all accounts...

The news just glorifys a small problem...its been there for years...remember sangate.

Are you suggesting that what is happening in Calais is just a small problem?

Allowing this situation to continue is feeding the rise of far-right-wing politics in Europe. And we know where that has lead in the past.
I have an in-law who is a CRS cop in Calais, you wouldn't want to hear him describe the things he sees these people getting up to. Incidentally he blames Merkel for the situation, not the UK.
I used to really enjoy going to Calais for a weekend; I would actively avoid the town now.

Does anyone in Europe apart from France and the UK really care how many immigrants hang around at Calais trying to sneak over the Channel? A few East European truck drivers will obviously be fed up but the rest of them will be laughing because if the problems are at Calais they're out of everyone else's back yards so totally irrelevant.

Sangat and the more recent shanty towns were there long before Merkel made her statement so a CRS cop blaming her is simply trying to cover up his own teams failure to deal with the problem when it started. These economic migrants didn't land in France but they knew exactly where they wanted to go so countries like Spain, Italy and Greece should shoulder the bulk of the blame for not arresting them then deporting them rather than hurrying them on their way north.

Which could be what France does post Article 50?

Could anyone blame France if they stopped policing the problem on their side then just left it to us to intercept them this side of the water?

I'm sure the twin messiahs known as Nigel and Boris will have answers because they certainly tried to pretend they did when canvassing for votes. Another way to view it is that over 50% of the population were convinced we didn't need to work with the EU so let's hope they don't like holidays where they need to travel through Calais (thumbs)

If the Frenceh did that, then we would put up much more stringent border controls on our side of the channel. It would then become even more difficult for the migrants to enter Britain and Calais would become less of a magnet for them in the first place. When we leave the EU, we won't even have to send them back to their original country of entry into the EU (I agree that the other EU contries should already be doing that anyway) but we could detain them until they are deported to their country of origin, wherever that may be in the world. That will become a deterrent as well.
