I was thinking along the lines of "what I need is a tiny plastic top box for the tank, so got on ebay and I've found my perfect solution - something like these with four small magnets bonded to the bottom, and rubber pads bonded to the magnets to protect the paintwork. Flip open, pay your tolls, clip closed, ride away. Petrol station or cafe, lift it off and take it with you. Could even compartmentalise the inside to prevent coins or keys rattling around all over the inside.
