The A5 in Wales is rather nice, Betys y Coed to Capel Curing and on to Holyhead. There are so many other nice places up there that if you had good weather you would be spoiled for choice. One year I went over intending t do to the Lake District. The sun came out off the ferry and we spent the entire time in North Wales, was just awesome. Its a great way to make your journey back to the ferry and if you are back on a Sunday the tunnel from Dublin Port takes you straight up the M1 for a small toll.

This was a Stenaline summer route and they have now very recently pulled it altogether. All the ferries will now be from Dublin Port.

There is a fast option on the Jonathan Swift from Dublin Port with Irish Ferries www.irishferries.com

The other option is take M50 around Dublin and M11/N11 to Rosslare. Both Stenaline and Irish Ferries operate from here too.

The good option is go via Rosslare and come back via Dublin. Ralph has made a very good suggestion too.......and for what its worth the Rosslare routes tend to be a small bit cheaper and you pay no toll on the M50.

Prices and ferries tend to be similar but if you get caught out and need a booking change Stenaline will help you out of hours but Irish ferries close. To avoid this take the phone numbers of the port offices with you.
This seems to be a really good idea and the Fishguard out, Dublin return seems to be the cheapest option too.

Thanks for this idea.

Beaumaris Castle on Anglesey worth a visit,as is Caernarvon? From there A4086 through the Llanberis Pass, past MT Snowdon. Left to Capel Curig,Betws y Coed,A470 to Trawsfynydd, left on A4712 to Bala.Right A494 to Dolgellau,A470 to Llanbrynmair, then right B4518 to Llanidloes, stay on for Rhayader. If you've time, tour the dams?? A470 to Newbridge on Wye,then right B4538 to Beulah.Left then right at Garth B4519 through Upper Chapel to Brecon. A40 to Sennybridge, then A4067 to Ystradgynlais :)

Tom, if you do come over via Holyhead then this is one of the best routes down to Walters Arena-an absolute cracker (thumbs)

......or come over via Rosslare and reverse the above route. The Elan Valley would be unmissable on the way back
