In reality the Microstart is just a lithium battery wrapped up with some useful regulated outputs and standard connectors, so your idea is saving some money if they aren't needed.
The early lithium batteries had a bad reputation for self igniting, but hopefully they are better now.
I wonder what the cold temp performance of Lithium is? It was high altitude and cold that reduced the battery performance for me. Both times it was with newish high quality AGM batteries (ODYSSEY & Varta) , that had a good charge after a days riding before setting camp for the night, that failed me. Once started and recharged they had no problems.
Your right on the KTM, the new ones come with Lithium's because of he weight saving. My KTM also has a kickstart, so not such a problem, but it was with the BMW I had the problems.
