Kodak Brownie mate, more your age range - or one of those with the flash gun that you hold in your other hand and has a black cloak that goes over your head.. might want the cloak extended for use with your helmet..
( Canon G12 awasome camera - you know the one, I dropped it at Applecross on the way back from the Ullapool meet last year - great camera.. I think it's now a G15.. )

Re: Compact camera
But do you need to drop it 3 times to get from a G12 to a G15? Or is one good drop enough to do it
Re: Compact camera
I use a Leica V-Lux20 which is a rebranded version of the panasonicTZ10, and its fantastic got it cheap off a web forum and its no better than the panasonic, its not waterproof but I have never had a problem even in the wet.
I specificaly wanted a good zoom and this has 12x optical zoom, have to say I have always had really good results with any of the panasonic range.

Re: Compact camera
I've got a Canon G12, but like to have a polarising filter on it for the days the sun comes out, so with the adapter fitted and in a bag it's no smaller than the Panasonic FZ62 in a case and polarising filter fitted.
Of course I can take the adapter of the G12, but it's still not a pocket camera, unless you have very big pockets, and doesn't have the telephoto range of the FZ62. Both aren't cheap, and sometimes the £50 camera I take with me takes just as good photo's.
So much depends on the space you're willing to sacrifice to take pictures, you could always buy a Garmin Montana 650, or, much cheaper the camera in a phone.

Re: Compact camera
The camera that will take the best picture, is the one that you will have with you.
I've had a DSLR and a bridge camera, but 99% of the time I cant be bothered to carry around the bulk of either of them and leave them at home. I've since sold the DSLR.
I also have an expensive superzoom compact..... but the camera that gets used almost all the time is a cheap Fuji compact because its so tiny its fits in my pocket and so cheap I don't care if it gets broken.

One drop is enough apparently as long as it is from a height of 1metre plus and a speed in excess of 25MPH in the rain....
